Once again Jakarta is swiming in its own sh1t. My heart goes out to teachers and their families in worst affected areas who won't even be able to read this.
Those who have been here a while will understand that disaster relief efforts are wholly ineffective. Newcomers please note the following: even if you are high and dry you can be affected by secondary problems like failures of banking systems. Already lots of ATM networks are down. Best to withdraw enough cash to keep you going in case things get worse. In the next few days expect fuel shortages and sudden shortages of even the most unexpected items.
Thank goodness it looks like the worst is over for now, but I have a horrible feeling there will be a few lives lost due to cack-handed incompetence of city authorities. Just hope none of our number are among the casualties. |

Yeah, got an sms this morning here in Korea from MIL and SIL that large parts of the city were under water. If local authorities could deflect their attention for a second from trying to police public morality, maybe they could get off their kretek-smoking, teh-swilling arses to do something about flood control. |
