I just heard that the HCT has downgraded the Daman health insurance plan from "International" to "Regional", which is less comprehensive.

Comments?

So, previously they had offered an International plan? If so, they must have been the only one. (and it wasn't such when I was there... purely local health care). In all my years in the Gulf, I always had to purchase an international plan whenever I left the country - in particular when traveling to the US where you do NOT want to be without coverage.

Does anyone else reading here have an employer paid international health plan? PI? AUS? ZU?

The PI only ever offered a local plan as in it only covers local gov't hospitals/clinics and no private coverage and also if you are female and hired with a family it only covers you and NOT your kids or husband. However, as a male faculty your whole family is covered. Remember the PI is run by ADNOC.

Yes the HCT had an international SOS component to it's heath plan which covered staff while on hols .

Daman has 5 levels of plans: Abu Dhabi, UAE, Regional, Intn't, Global.
HCT originally told emplyees they were getting the Int'l plan. After this they realized this was more than they wanted to spend on their employees health care and downgraded it to the Regional plan. Whereas some people knew about the change a month ago, there are many out there on trips abroad for the 2 week semester break that are unaware of the change.

You would think the HCT would have had the figures before them before making such a decision, only to rescind it later. How lame is that?

About as lame as the Qatar Foundation. They cancelled the Interglobal policy for hundreds of employees over mid-year break, while many were out of the country. A new policy with a local Qatar company (whoopie-doo) was put in place, but there were a few days when there was no coverage at all. Several people were surprised when they checked into hospitals and clinics and found out that their little plastic cards were only good for scraping up chewing gum from the floors.

The Foundation made good on medical bills incurred by employees as a result of the lapse.

This is just another one of those Middle East things...

UAEU plan was sort of international but there were so many exclusions (both for international care and the care you could claim for in the UAE) it was a bit ridiculous. Also making claims for treatment one had had in another country was not exactly straightforward. But people did manage it.

At present UAEU is in a weird postion - everyone was given a Daman card for a new scheme and told to destroy the old card, then OOPS! they were told don't use the Daman health card, please carry on with the old one... which luckily many people had held on to as we have been in the ME for a while.
