Dear Wiser Ones
I am in Shenzhen now and am lookig for a contract in Shenzhen, Guangzhou or Beijing (at a pinch).
I have three years experience in ESL in Korea and Singapore.
Can anyone direct me to a well paying school or a website of decent job listings? I am a little out of my depth in this new country.
Thanks a lot in anticipation.

I put this in another post in regards to what you are asking. You really DO have to just ask around where you are. Find out WHERE the local EXPATS hang out. If you are in Shenzhen, then there are TONS of 'pats around! There are decent jobs in the area that pay well, but you have to SNIFF THEM OUT on your own; i.e. ask a LOT of questions. If you didn't land a job with a school when you got here, then by all means, FIND A SCHOOL PRONTO! The semester just started only weeks ago, so most all the good ones are gone.
NETWORKING is the key, and until you actually MEET people, you really are up the creek without a paddle.
If you come to GZ, you can hang out at two or three local bars to get info:
The first two are near the Garden Hotel area, in the Dong Shan district
Elephant and Castle
[doesn't open until 5:00PM 7 days a week]
HillBar [during the day and early evening]
And...Lucys? I think is the name, and I have never been there, but I heard people talk about it. I think it is a bit out of the way though...
Just walk up and introduce yourself to any foreigners that look like teachers, and explain your situation. Most people can usually give you a lead of some kind, but it most likely won't be the big money stuff; remember--things are already rolling and you got here a bit late.
Good luck

And how long did you stay "out of my [your] depth" in China without a contract? Worked illegally? Still here? |
