He spent 3 years in Abu Dhabi and the past two in Dubai, and he's been at HCT (first the men's and now the women's colleges) so the situation is different. I hadn't realised it was a primary school situation ghost was going for, and I didn't know AlAin was so different. I actually liked the energy in Al Ain better. It felt more relaxed than Dubai.. but then again, I wasn't living there.

If he's at HCT, I hope he'll be treating you to something nice after his juicy pay rise ...

When ghost interviewed with IAT in Montreal in October 2006, it thought that it was going to work at the Technical Institute teaching adults English there....and was surprised to later be informed that it (ghost) would have to teach with the ADEC-IAT project in the middle schools affiliated to the Technical Institute.

Following this, teachers at the ADEC-IAT project have e-mailed ghost advising it not to come, citing a disastrous, disorganized setting, totally unmotivated students, and unhelpful management.

Yes, the salary and package at ADEC-IAT project are quite good, but one hesitates to accept a position where the teachers since September 2006 have been dropping out like flies.....including the programming directors and other foreign highly placed staff......and quite frankly, ghost no longer wants to teach unruly children or adolescents.......after going through that nonsense in Turkey, and sampling the same at present as a "sub" in Montreal.....it is simply not worth the stress, no matter how enticing/alluring the salary.....life is short, and ghost feels there are others better suited to withstanding those kinds of conditions......

Al Ain may be a decent place for ex-pats, but if one is miserable at work, is it really worth going over there.?.....

Follow this page for future developments.

Greyhound is disgusting. Their customer service is abominable too.

On a related note, Amtrak also sucks. I've had so many frustrations in taking the train here in the states. It's too bad, because a train is a good thing if you don't have to travel too far.

Somehow I took a Greyhound bus from Seattle to San Diego. It was a 28 hour ride or something ridiculous like that, and I thought it was great. However, that was years ago, back when I was idealistic and energetic. Now, I would just be revolted and depressed.

Don't go to Al Ain. Or to Korea. Go to Turkey and teach adults. Korea is full of really screwy EFLers.

Keep what little sanity you have left, oh spook !

Al Ain is out for the moment - until things improve at the ADEC project, where there were 30 incoming teachers in September who signed 2 year contracts.....and now .....there are just 7 brave souls left...need one say more about Al Ain...?

As for Turkey, ghost has already taught there, including so called "adults" who were University students from the Anadolou University (Eskisehir)....and the situation was not ideal for the teachers teaching them, as the students had a tendency to run to management for trivial matters, making it difficult for the foreign teachers to establish continuity.

Korea - is a big question mark.....and ghost is determined to teach there, having signed a contract to teach at a teacher training college (as a teacher trainer for Korean EFL teachers in service) for 2.7 million, starting in April 2007 (40 hour week with 21 teaching/19 office).

Ghost does not take much notice of recommendations and warnings any more, because each individual is different, and recommendations or warnings are only valid from the standpoint of the person dispensing them.......
