It's no good complaining about your school unless you tell us which one it is. I mean, where's the fun for all the forum readers?
Also it sounds like you should quit that job. |

| Yep, sounds like you really need a new job. It's hard to get motivated when conditions are bad, negativity makes you feel drained and you dread going to work. A lot of us here know that feeling, but what's making you stay in such an awful place? If it's terrible, leave! |

I'll go first.
Rate the following items on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 beng the lowest and 10 being the highest:
1) salary/wages 4 (barely enough to live on)
2) maturity of students 2 (about 3rd grade level)
3) integration of Turkish and Foreign Staff 2 (backstabbing, rude and jealous, about 4 nice ones)
4) working environment 3 (almost tolerable)
5) management 7,3,and a 0, for the dir. and 2 ass. dir. Avg. 3.333
6) fringe benefit 0 (what are those? little paid time off, food sucks)
7) available resources 1 (1 copy machine for 40 teachers that is always broke) |
I know that I've already gushed about British Side on here, but I'm just SO DAMN HAPPY!!! It is the best place I have ever worked, in terms of almost everything mentioned by Blondie10. The pay, Turkish staff, working environment, management, fringe benefits, and available resources are all FANTASTIC. Especially the management and the Turkish staff - they are 100% professional, which is hard to find in Istanbul, I believe. The Turkish staff are probably so happy because they are also well-paid and don't have to work 6 days a week, 10 hours a day, like at some other language schools. The students are not perfect, but they are professionals or college students who have paid a lot of money for courses, and in general they are very motivated. All in all, it is a WONDERFUL place to work and everyone with a bit of experience and a good ESL certıfıcate should apply here. If you want contact information, pm me! |

I like the idea of the thread,I think most of us if we are honest can identify with some of the sentiments shown in the op .It would be nice if this forum could be used as a catalyst for change at some of these places advising someone to change jobs is the last resort ,what if there are no other choices ?
For too long salaries, working conditions and fringe benefits have been steadily eroded, the healthy gap between the Turkish salary and those once enjoyed by the "yabanci" is now a fraction of what it was ,yet the cost of living has increased and we (foreign workers) bear the brunt of them. All too often many of the local staff still reside at home with their parents paying a nominal amount towards living expenses . Finally , Sheik, you are right, it is puerile but the backstabbing and jealousy goes on but the biggest culprits are our fellow countrymen and women . |

Some places do have a them and us attitude. Usually because Turks and foreigners do the same job but have different salaries. I think Bilgi dealt with this best. All got the same salary but the foreigners had quite a healthy housing allowance- based on the fact that Turks can stay with family, etc.
PS Molly,I am sure everyone is looking forward to your answer |

i wasn't going to, but since i have been invited-- or dared-- here goes. i would be curious to see what other ET people say, like the HT who posts and perhaps coffeespoonman. i don't know of many ET teachers (relatively speaking) who post here.
1) salary/wages 7
2) maturity of students 8
3) integration of Turkish and Foreign Staff 7
4) working environment 8
5) management 7.5 does that include me? in that case, 10 ha ha
6) fringe benefit 6
7) available resources 9
are y'all surprised or disappointed i didn't give ET all 10s? |

| That was brave Molly, esp with thrifty hovering in the background as usual .Most places would not get those sorts of scores for lots of different reasons least of all pay and conditions . I think all the petty catty b .s.that goes on behind closed doors among the "elite " members of the staff about the rank and file ordinary teachers is the worst aspect .Does nothing for morale . I would like to see a lot less politics in the workplace . |

Is it another case of a barn door shattering open ... as a militarized dump-truck bursts onto the scene ... a dump truck hastily knocked together from scraps of wood, coke cans, and a rusty lawnmower ... with The E Team at the wheel ...
Or are they getting closer to the truth this time?
What are the wages? Is there a salary? What are the benefits? What are the paid holidays? What days off do staff get? |
