I've been out of the game for a few years. But I am thinking of getting into it. I read some of the BS on here about long hours, f-ed up pay, breaking contracts and I have reservations about giving everything up here in the US (again) and moving to China. I love China and miss it, so I am drawn to going back. So I pose the question, how bad is it really? |

This strikes me as a post with a real edge to it.
Shall we talk about how bad things are in the United States? I mean -- what country have you bombed today? I mean -- which journalists have you thrown in jail because the Great Shrub didn't like the reporting? Which companies have gone bankrupt, not paying their workers? Who has been maliciously placed on a no-fly list? Etc., etc.
Why don't you reword your post in a more positive manner with some real questions instead of this typical small-town all-American bias? If it's so bad here, then frankly perhaps you may wish to stay in Oregon -- after all, it rains there every day, wages are at a 1960's level compared with the rest of the country, drugs all over, high unemployment, no meaningful jobs...etc., etc.
Now what do you specifically want to know in a realistic manner? |

Jes*s, HFG, if a post isn't to your liking, ignore it. Have you got so little to do that you must respond in this manner? Not interesting? Vague? Ignore it! |

You ask a strange question for someone who has been here before. If you stay away from the institutes and either work for universities or public schools then things are pretty safe.
What type of pay are you expecting but? Most Uni and goverment jobs only pay about 4,500 RMB for roughly 16 hours for someone with experiance and they throw in accommodation plus your airfare after 12 months. It allows you to live okay here. A lot better than the dole in Oz, that's for sure or even a good English teaching Instutite for that matter. Dave's job board will tell you what's offering anyway.
I personally find life back home boring.
I just got myself a computer / office chair for 150 RMB today! Back in Oz it would cost me the same in dollars.

Very strange post for someone who has been here before. Might I hazard that this person has never actually taught here, simply visited as a tourist, or maybe has never even been here at all. The vagueness of his post tells me he does not wish to be talked down to, but at the same time he does not wish to say too much, for fear of showing his ignorance. Hence the vague affirmation that he has been here, and nothing else. My advice, stay home. |

Dragongirl......How bad is it really? Perhaps not the most positive way to ask the question? Maybe the answer lies there.......How good is it really? Now that's a different question......
It all depends on what you want..........
For example
Lots of cash.....sure...go to any large city....you can get a nice well paid job and work on the side and maybe land some non-teaching work to vary things a little....
Authentic middle of nowhere gosh i'm really on the edge experience.........no worries most schools in the boonies have problems getting/holding onto teachers..................
Maybe you can tell us a bit about your previous work here and what you want and then some more specific advice can be offered. |

Thanks man, you offer me more of a clearer picture. What I meant by how bad is it, I mean, how bad of a risk am I taking to work for a school that may not be willing to honor its agreement? My experience over there was not with schools, but as a student and as a freelance tutor. So I really wasn't in the school circuit in China. I don't know how the system works. In Korea, I was a teacher in a school, and the situation with how foreign teachers are treated there is pretty bad. Based on what I have read so far, it sounds like Chinese universities are the way to go. My worry is that I will go over there and spend half my time fighting with my boss over the details such as pay, hours, and other things instead of being able to really enjoy my time over there. I went through that in Korea, I don't want to go through it again.
As far as pay, I graduated with three majors - international affairs, Chinese and Spanish. So again, maybe the universities? Is 10,000 RMB a month reasonable? I have over a year of teaching experience, again, in Korea, so I have something to offer. I realize there are no guarantees, but I would like to minimize the risk of having to job hop.
What I really want is a reasonably stable job, with reasonable bosses and decent pay. I am shooting for Beijing, Suzhou or Hangzhou. I really do miss China and want to go back and enjoy it longer term. Please give me some advice on how to proceed. |

HunanForeignGuy, your response to "If you don't like it, just ignore it" was simply a circular one, and said nothing. Your like some dopey kid who says "Bounces off me and sticks to you". Come on man, that the best you can do?
I gotta tell ya man, your one of the worst on this sight for negative crap. You have no replies more original then that? Honestly, your negativity seems to know no bounds it seems. |

Well, I can combine it with my tutoring experiencing and come up with almost two years. I was there for about 6 months. |
