I have a Bachelor's Degree but no teaching experience. I am not interested in teaching at one of those private English schools, as the tales of woe seem to outnumber pleasant experiences. What I'm wondering is, is it possible to get a job at a university without teaching experience? Or do most people without experience have to teach at a language mill? There's a lot of websites and job ads that proclaim No Experience Necessary! But a lot of them seem sketchy. I guess I'm wondering if it is possible to get a good, reliable job without having experience. Is it too much to ask for?
Also . . . I have lived in China and speak basic Chinese (I'm also taking lessons right now), which I doubt makes any difference but I thought I'd mention it. |

As far as I know, most universities do not require prior teaching experience. I met many recent college graduates, without any experience, at a university that I previously worked for. I'm not sure about this generally unapplied regulation, mentioned elsewhere, that requires 2 years experience in order to qualify for a FEC. I didn't have 2 years teaching experience, yet was given a FEC in Jiangsu Province.

universities can be worse than language mills in this game. dont get caught in the bull. Most times they are better, but they can be worse. they are not the same as the universities back home where you are actually skilled once you leave.
What I cant believe is that the students here know that school sucks and complain regularly about how they need not go. Once they are abroad, however, they produce falsities about their "high level" of education.
I taught business at a uni here. No business background. univerisity level. you do the math.
Unis are safer but not better. |
