Next....what IS politeness
What does it mean? With all of the technology we have....how can you NOT 'get back to someone'?
For me....it's a HUGE issue (must be the CND in me....but let's not talk about tipping )
Depending on the mode of contact, it depends on fast I expect to hear from you....but I AM waiting to hear something. I am the person who wants the "OK' text message when you finalize things....but that is minor.
Emailing friends.....I have to admit I am HORRIBLE at with someone who is my best friend.....but she is even worse and my lack of response has grown from that.....
But disregarding that....what is impolite?
I HATE it when I am 'chatting' and someone leaves.....and NEVER comes back. I get it...things come up. But how difficult (after you've been chatting with me) is it to type in 'bye'?
I don't need the reason why you are leaving...I just think it would be nice if you let me know that you're not coming back.
Am I being totally....I don't know what the word would be but....how do YOU react to non face-to-face contact?
I honestly find it offensive. And I am referring to boyfriends and friends (I just can't get rid of the parents...no matter how hard I try ) |

Are you referring to politeness on the Internet or in general?
I saw you mention boyfriend in that list though so I'm obligated to bring up the infamous 'conversation with the girlfriend' problem.
I speak for most guys when I say that we hate talking on the phone for more than 5 minutes. With a lot of girls you need a really really good excuse to get off the phone. Telling her the truth is very rarely an option. ("I need to go because I'm just sick of talking on the phone and would rather be doing something fun. The only reason I'm still here is because I really do love/care for you and don't want to hurt your feelings.")
It's for this reason that messenger is a godsend to guys. We can talk to the girlfriend while doing other things. Our ears don't hurt from the phone. We don't drift off occasionally and miss things you say. That being said conversations do tend to die a lot in messenger when there really is nothing else to say.
If neither of us have said anything to each other in the last 30 minutes because we're both doing something else.... do we really need to once again create some incredibly good reason to say goodbye? I don't know. I would rather just leave than make up some bs. Regardless I don't think it's worth getting upset over. |

This is exactly how I feel when talking to my husband on the phone, add to the fact that the only phones we have are cell phones and long distance Mexican cell phone calls are ridiculously expensive so I (being the frugal one) am like tell me what you need to say and hang up! we can chit chat on messenger! He get's offended and thinks I don't want to talk to him. When it's really just that I got over the phone in the early 90s. |

You can also talk to people over msn, you just need a microphone. If you have a webcam then bingo, you have a video call. It's actually rather easy and microphones are cheap...well in Canada they were, we haven't looked into them here. |

Yeah Matt, my dad and brother are major computer nerds we got our first home computer in 1983, all through the 80s my dad would "get" us computer games, in code, and we had to correctly program them if we wanted to play the game. He was trying to teach us something and I guess it worked, by brother is a major techy and I'm a humanities type who knows how to use computers pretty well. I studied abroad in chile in 1993, and when I returned to the US, my brother introduced me to the IRC so I could chat with my friends there, I also have kept in touch with him and my parents that way since then. I think I've probably talked on the phone with my brother less than 10 times in the last 20 years. Now, I IM him to his cell phone from MSN IM. |
