I've only been there a few times, as I always encountered bus tours. Maybe just bad timing. I know a lot of people like it, and as you've been 60 times, I bow to your superior experience, Gordon. I do remember that I liked the small "woods" at the back.
I suppose I prefer the smaller gardens or even the "forest" whenever I can get to it. I happen to be among the carless in Shikoku. |
Pristine forests...... ah yes, I do remember it faintly.
I always get the yearly passes for Ritsurin so I go quite a bit, even if it is just for a quick stroll through the "forest". |

Wow, I went away for a few days and this thread kind of took off! Thanks for the advice...I had a feeling that a car would maybe be a necessity, since I've had little luck getting out to ANY nice nature areas in Japan without one. Shikoku's a bit far for my aging yellow plate to drive though, so can anyone give me some advice on renting a car? I have a pretty good road map book, so as long as I can get wheels, I can get myself around. Info about costs, insurance, etc would be much appreciated!
The cities sound pretty cool, but I'm more looking to spend a couple of days in a tent camping and hiking! |

Not sure where you are coming from, but probably you'd start from either Takamatsu or Tokushima. I think Takamatsu would be easier to start off in as it is easier to get around in, very simple to navigate there and more to see too.
Not sure about car rental places, but there are probably places near the train station. No one will speak English, not even at the tourist info booth, so you may want to make arrangements ahead of time if your Japanese isn't decent. |

| Hey, just a quick "thanks" to everyone who sent in some ideas for my trip! It was a blast...and SUPER CHEAP thanks to the fact that most places weren't open for the season, and as such weren't charging! If anyone wants info on a similar trip, feel free to PM me! You can check out photos at http+//cameraotaku.my-expressions.com. |
