I'm planning to head out to Asia for a few years to try my hand a ESL teaching. My original plan was to head to China first, Zhuhai and obtain a TEFL/TESOL certificate. However, I think i'm probably going to end up in South Korea teaching and was wondering if anyone new of places in Korea where you can obtain a recognised TEFL/TESOL certificate?
Also i have several other qualifications unrelated to teaching, an Under grad degree in Computer Science, a post grad degree in Law and an Ma in Law. will these be of any relevance when it comes to obtaining a job?
One final question. Does anyone know anything about the possibility of studying in South Korean universities. I wouldnt mind extending my Ma into a Phd in some form of international Law. Is this a realistic option? can it be funded by teaching, maybe in the university itself? can it even be taken in English? or will i need to head out with a large amount of funding myself?
if anyone has any info thats great, if anyone can point me in the direction of any info thats great too!!  |

There are not many English language MAs or PHds in Korea. Most are for international business. I have been looking myself. There are scholarships, I know there is atleast one person down in the Korean forums who decided to do an MBA at a Korean uni because it was completely funded by scholarships... I don't know any more about that.
The MA in Law won't help you very much, but it won't hurt and may open a few more doors than others without any MA. Try to use it, but don't expect too much out of it (atleast in Korea and China).
Finally, I found my bachelor of Computer Science actually did help when teaching ESL. At least in my studies, I dealt with basic linguistics and had to develop my own (albeit basic) language. Also, I came out being able to use over 12 languages (programming) and that does help in a way, though obviously in a small way. |

You might be surprised what opportunities are around - but most people won't know of them and you will have to dig them out.
While teaching in Taiwan - over ten years ago - I met a man who was quite happy teaching law at a university there.
Real success in a life overseas often has to do with specialization (advanced degrees are part of this) and finding that niche that fits you exactly in terms of past experience as well as interests and knowledge. |

Yes! You can teach the employees of law firms. Charge/bill them accordingly! |

If you want to try to arive in August/September, you might be able to pull off a university job. Even with an MA in Law. Some schools want any M.A. Though it is hard to get a university job unless you are in Korea to interview in person unless you know someone who is curretnly working at that university. |

| DaveW125, I don't know about PhD programs but there are many English M.A. programs in Seoul these days. They have foreign students but I think that the real goal of the programs is to prepare Koreans for PhD programs abroad. There are M.A. programs in International Affairs, Korean Studies, TEFL, etc. I don't know about all of them but I do know they exist. There are also Tech Grad schools that teach in English. I met a guy from Pakastan that is attending one in Gwangju. One can probably earn a PhD there without knowing any Korean. |
