Hey all, just wondering if anybody can tell me about Gifu City/Gifu Prefecture. The most important question is- is it a safe area to live in? Ok cheers.

My best (Japanese) mate lives just outside Gifu city in the countryside. It looks like a pretty spread out city with not much going on. Very quiet and plain I think. But the countryside just outside the city is easy to get to and beautiful, depends what tickles you.
Gifu is known as the Bronx or Crompton of Japan, don't go down there at night or one of the gangs will pop a hole in your head. |

In fact the film " Do the Right Thing" was based on a hot summer in Gifu city and the goings on at the local pizza hut. |

I don't know of a violent Crompton. Did you mean Trumpton? |

That's it, just near east side Camblewick Green. The guys in that hood don't mess araound.
When you arrive at Gifu station just put your head down and WALK QUICKLY to the taxi stand and speed off, don't take any risks. |

Well, even if Japanman is drunkposting from his hammock again today, he speaks the truth. The Gifu massif are notorious. |

I've never been to Gifu City, but Gifu Prefecture is one of my favorite places (esp. Takayama) in Japan. You'll like it if you are into nature. Nagoya isn't too far away, and you'll be roughly half-way between Kansai and Kanto. Too far for a day trip, but if you have a 2 or (preferably 3 ) day weekend, you should be able to travel to either in little time, via shinkansen. |

I can still remember the Gifu Gang wars of 2005, I think there still rebuilding half the city to this day. And how many dead? 10,000? 100,000? its hard to keep track since there still finding bodies.

I lived on the other side of Gifu for 2 years. I rode my bicyle into Gifu-ken all the time. My best friend's husband is from Gifu city. Yes, it is safe, but some might find it boring. I like the countryside, and I agree with the other person who posted about Takayama. Also, Nagoya is just a train ride away if you want to go to the city on weekends. |
