15 years in Asia; nearly 10 in Japan, 2 in Taiwan, 3 in Hong Kong (before the handover). I have found Japan to be the best for making money, plus I gained a spouse here. Taiwan was enjoyable (great food, great people ), but the pollution was bad ('95 and '96) and with the subway construction Taipei was a real mess. Hong Kong was a very fun place to live, I saw more art type of things (performances, concerts, etc..), didn't enjoy it as much as I was struggling, though I had cheap rent.
As to languages, I found studying Mandarin the most enjoyable (though swearing in Cantonese has its moments ), and Japanese is there, but I find the grammar confusing at best. |
