|
|
Now, I know I am REALLY going out on a limb here, I'm almost half embarrassed to ask this question, but what the hell, I'm new to Poland, I'll give it a shot. Sticks and stones, so to speak....
Anyone know of somewhere in Wroclaw where you can get decent asian food? I love it all, sushi, korean, thai, even a greasy dose of chinese would be fine.
A week ago, I never would have dreamed of asking this question, because for one, I had "chinese food" at the Galeria in Wroclaw, and it basically tasted like the chicken stew my mom would make with uncle ben's rice. I had assumed from that point forward that Poland just doesn't get asian cuisine. At all.
BUT.....last week, I was informed that I will be teaching 3 Koreans this week, new to the school, not to mention the first Koreans, or possibly even asians as a whole, to my school in Wroclaw all together. To boot, when I was out and about on saturday night, I saw many koreans out there, it was trippy. (No joke, I saw 10 of them in one bar, I couldn't believe it. My old roommate back in the states is Korean, he was totally floored when he got that email.)
Call it coincidence, but who knows, maybe there's a hidden gem asian restuarant out there, owned and run by asians, making decent asian dishes in Wroclaw???
I'm from the NY area where the asian food is the absolute best, and i've really been jones'n for it lately.
so ok, let the laughs pour in, but if after 50 posts of "HAHAHAHAHA", I see the 51st post mentioning a great place to get asian cuisine and it turns out to be true, it'll all be worth it.

I'll take the first crack....
Are you seriously serious? I don't live in Wroclaw but have been there a few times, but don't really recall the Asian scene. I would guess that on pretty much every block of every street you can find a hole-in-the-wall Asian restaraunt of some sort. They all serve the standard mix of rice, meat, vegetables and cabbage.
To offer advice: There is probably a branch of "Wok" which offers a slightly different version of Asian food served in overpriced, tiny bowls, so you could check that out. |

Sakana does have really good sushi! It's worth checking out, but yeah, it is most definitely not cheap. There is a Korean/Japanese restaurant in Rynek. I think it's called Maru? I can't recall exactly. It's alright, but also not cheap and not awesome (in my opinion at least). Hotel Lothus (across from Galeria Dominikanska) has an Asian Restaurant which I noticed, while walking by the other day, is now offering sushi. I haven't tried so I couldn't say what it's like. I've noticed quite a few other Chinese restaurants and signs for sushi while walking around but I haven't been to many. There is a Chinese restaurant next to Coffee Planet in Rynek (you have to enter the building, it's also next to a bookstore, and then it's downstairs), I think it's called China Town. And I've heard that Pekin is pretty good. ul. Kotlarska 24/1a.
If you find somewhere really good, lemme know! I'm from Vancouver and I do miss GOOD Asian food! What I would love is Thai food and Indian food though! Mmmm... |

i am seriously serious.
i even walked past a chinese girl today, couldn't have been any older than 18, speaking fluent polish. i just never expected this sort of thing.
also, there really isn't that many chinese restuarants, certainly not on "every block of every street," that's for sure. There's maybe a small handful sporadically scattered throughout Stare Miasto, but otherwise, not much. I found a Korean/Japanese restaurant right in the Rynek, but after looking at the menu, it just looked like they had it all wrong, not one Korean dish on the whole menu, for starters.
70 zlotych is steep for sure, but i'd be willing to give it a shot. |

70zl is perhaps a little low as an estimate unless you watch what you eat. At the Warsaw Sakanas you pay 18zl (those are the blue plates) for 2 pieces of tuna nigiri or for five slices (i.e. one roll) of Philly maki with tuna/salmon, about the same for California maki, 12zl for two pieces of salmon nigiri, ebi nigiri is 25zl (black plates), same for ebi maki. But I think the prices will be slightly lower outside Warsaw, maybe a zlot or two per plate. Normally the girlfriend and I expect to spend from 140 to 180 between us (including drinks) but that's to stuff ourselves stupid (altho we do stay away from the black plates). |

In Lodz there is a sushi place that starts at 8 zl per plate (you just take it off of a little boat which floats along a canal in the bar) and goes up to I think 15 or so for a plate. It's a small place (Tokyo) on Piotrkowska. They even have a real Japanese guy working there. Not being an expert on sushi I really can't pass any judgements but it seems like the real deal and I didn't get sick afterward. |

I went to Sakana in Wroclaw last night - tasty as always. The sushi plates ranged from approx 9zl-30zl. 2 of us ate for about 120zl. It's a nice place to go out for a special occasion... |

btw, to all you nay sayers out there about the Korean community on the rise, I spoke to my director today and got the inside scoop. Apparently about 1,000 Korean families have been transplanted to Wroclaw. Something about some new offices/companies going up, I would assume electronics or something. my school has atleast another 7-8 Korean students that just signed up this week. |

Maru on Rynek does Korean dishes, they just dont use the Korean names for them (and they're almost certainly not as good as the real thing).
And there's no real mystery about the Koreans in Wroclaw - LG are there and are building a huge plant somewhere near Bielany. |

There's a place called Pekin (go to the north of the Rynek and there's a sign), which is good for a laugh. Spelling errors abound...I recommend the sweet and sour Bork. |

There's also HANOI on Ul. Legnicka, 2 tram stops from Plac Jana Pawla. And if you like Westernised Chinese I recommend the Chinese bar at the junction of Halera and Grabyszynska. |

Just like to add that in Krakow there is certainly not a decent Chinese place to be found. I tried 4 places before I decided I did not wish to waste 15 zlts on a plate of steaming Polish food with a little soy sauce added any longer. I've taken to making my own by stir frying a lot of garlic and onions with chicken and broccoli and adding some Chinese sauce mix you can get at Alberts for 6.99--put this over steaming jasmine rice and according to some it's almost as good as the real thing.
Krakow's sushi scene is marginally acceptable. I actually prefer the place in Galeria Krakowska to the one in Kazimierz. |
