day ten on the island, and finally an interview. ive sent out a countless number of emails and resumes, and have only received one response so far. its likely my own fault, and so ive decided to try a new approach - problem being, i dont know what that approach should be yet.

im about to walk around taichung wearing a suit and tie, carrying a dozen copies of my resume, and start banging on doors.

good idea?
help?
anyone?

Here's a better idea: Get on a scooter, or at least a bicycle. You'll cover more area faster than you will on foot.

Also, have you tried other towns and / or recruiters?

Hey Craigzy,

You don't need to go all over the city.

Just find out where the elementary schools are. You will find at least 10 schools (of all shapes and sizes) that offer English classes.

Get a good, small notebook so that you can keep everything straight. Remember to smile---it shows your confidence!

Best wishes!

If you don't have a phone yet - GET ONE. A local phone number will go a long way towards getting responses from employers.

I'll be in the same spot soon.

By the way, how do I make my avatar smaller?

yea, that avatar is pretty ridiculous.

as for the hunt, I've been emailing and contacting like mad to limited results. i might have to suck it up and go to a chain school. or go to hong kong and try and get an extension.

are there any burger kings in taichung? i need a bacon double cheeseburger.

Craig............

I am going to talk to you like I would hope someone would talk to me if I found myself in your situation:

Get off your fricken' butt and pound the pavement. Looking for a job is a fulltime job. Nothing better than showing up at the school and saying you can start right away. There are thousands of jobs out there but they aren't going to waltz themselves into your inbox. This ain't Korea son.

Don't be such a lazy git.

Mr. Toe speaks the truth. You have to start walking into schools and asking to meet the manager. I'm a school owner, and I get a lot of email inquiries about jobs. Most of them get tossed, unless I have a position open at the time. When I do have a position open, I enjoy meeting with the walk-ins, as there's always the chance that I'll find the teacher I want.

Take charge of the situation, and do it ASAP, or you'll end up broke and desperate.

just what is a git anyway?

from all i've heard so far, there's a snowball's chance in java of getiing a job in taipei through the internet. that won't keep from trying in these 5 weeks i have left before landing in taipei, but i plan on a lot pavement pounding and a lot of smiling. Laughing

I've had this same person, like others here, try to put the blame on you, as if THEY MADE IT ALL HAPPEN! One even told me my lack of finding a job was ". . .a reflection of your character." For some reason or another this person acts like the John Wayne of Taiwan.

Fact is, you won't make it happen, BUT JUST HAVE TO BE AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME! Go through your daily routines of finding a job, say you've done what you could, and if this isn't where you're meant to be, move on.

that was such a helpful post SP...reiterating what has already been said for the poster, but with your typical cynicism attached to it...

there are so many jobs available, in so many places on the island...

i will agree with you 100% "being in the right place at the right time" is applicable to finding the "ideal" job situation (as clearly you did not right off the bat with HESS), but it seems that the OP is getting a bit desperate to find work....

I don't think TS was out of line in saying that the OP is being too lazy, and needs to get out and pound the pavement...there are plenty of "less than ideal" jobs out there that the OP could take to allow them to stay in the country until they find something more to their liking...not everyone is going to find a job they like right off the plane, we all know that, but desperate times call for desperate measures, even if that means taking the 10 hour a week job that will give you an ARC...at least you don't have to "move on" and leave the country, that would be a real shame....

Good Luck with the job hunt OP! Surprised

I guess I've been making the same mistake, because I've primarily been looking through internet job postings, with lackluster results. So far, I've received responses from areas surrounding Taipei only.
