Does anyone have any idea if a Japanese fax machine/ telephone (not keitai) will work outside Japan, Europe specifically? Obviously it would require a transformer but is there anything about the technology that would be incompatible?

Except for some countries in Europe using the BT data cable connection standard (Japan uses the US standard) which just requires a plug adapter on one end of the data cable you should be good to go for connection to any digital exchange anywhere in the world.

Indeed. But you DO need an adapter for it to work. A Japanese phone/fax will work out-of-the-box in the United States or Canada (and vice-versa) but other countries, you'll have to hunt down and buy extra gear.

In fact, you will likely need 2. An adaptor for the telephone cord, and another for the power cord. As far as the power cord goes, you may need a step-up transformer if your system is going to be used in Europe as you will be going from 100V AC to 220 V AC.
