Hi,
Just wondered if anyone could give me an idea of going rates for private tutoring in France. I've 2 years' teaching experience, an MA and CELTA. Don't have own transport but live in the middle of the city so getting to places is cheap and easy.
Obviously don't want to pitch my lessons too high in the price stakes, but don't wish to under-sell myself either!
Advice / opinions much appreciated - go on, help a newbie!

Non-qualified native speakers charge as little as 15 euros an hour. If you include travel time and planning, this isn't very much, especially if you have qualifications, but most of the people I tutored didn't seem that interested in qualifications. I think you could get a fair bit more if you had the time to wait around for the people who were prepared to pay extra to get someone who knew what they were doing though. |

I've been charging 20 euros/hour and have never had any client dispute that rate. Whenever it's someone I'm not really interested in teaching -- absolute beginners, for example -- I say 25 euros and let them take it or leave it. No one has ever agreed to that amount, so I assume that 20 euros must be around the average rate. However, I haven't tried the 25-euro stance in awhile. |
