I've heard their internet system and computers are serious garbage.
My buddy says the guys who teach English are at the bottom of the barrel

How about the students? the courses? Is there any redeeming thing to this job?

There are many teachers who are interested more in teaching than the social life. (no criticism meant... just that many older teachers would avoid Dubai because of no interest in the lifestyle) I have had jobs where the working and living conditions were not great, but the students made it tolerable for a year or two.

Do at least the students appreciate you?

The university internet system is complete,absolute,unmitigated rubbish.
Otherwise,this is a wonderful uplifting experience especially for nature lovers and hikers.

If I was teaching in Iraq, the internet would be the least of my worries and I would figure that the internet would be rubbish.

Here are some comments from w/in Iraq. The experiences she relays about the uni are 2nd hand, but her experiences in Iraq are 1st hand:

issues with being paid on time
there have been three deparment heads this year
classism
housing conditions are poor-there's no a/c in the accomodation
problems with getting proper medical attention when necessary
cars are expensive-you must take taxis everywhere
not much of a social life (not much to do)
items promised in the contract aren't followed through on
some people have been working there for 6 months and have yet to sign a contract


As I re-read that list of comments, I see a parallel between my living and working conditions in every country I've lived in. Not paying on time should be the biggest read flag, though. Sounds like a typical new university in the Middle East.

Though I'm quoting someone else, I'm going to assume she means there's discrimination towards the lower social classes...something that is pandemic in many nations of the region.

Hey Stoth... isn't 'pandemic' overstating it just a bit? Laughing But, I know what you mean, in spite of the equality stressed in the Quran, Arab society is very class conscious.

I don't know if it's overstating, VS...perhaps it's worse in the nations of the region with a bigger gap between rich and poor. It's not often I get to serve as a dictionary on this board. Confused
