Gun laws are fairly lax here

There not that lax. It costs an arm and a leg each year to keep a gun. You can get a licence to keep it at home and second one to carry it on you.

Most of the guns out there are not legal, and unlike the states or O.Z all forms of automatic weapons are illegal...

3. Do you need a marriage license to spend a night in a hotel with a woman? I'm not actually bothered if I do or dont cause I doubt it'll be an issue for me, just worries me if it is true.

BB.

We were asked for ours in Ankara. Elsewhere, I don't think it would've been an issue. Luckily we had it with us.

Hey Calsimsek,

Are you Turkish? Or can foreigners obtain gun licenses too?

Tarte tatin,

I apologize profusely. What a sad, sad, person it is who takes the time to steal an avatar off dave's.

Good to see that everyone knows their manners.

Its a curious question. Are you planning on going to a wedding and want to make sure you are sutably prepared? I read somewhere that all of Turkey has less violent deaths than NYC per capita (study probably taken after the war with in the SW.) You shouldn't be afraid of the guns, but you should look out for the cats. They're goddamned ferocious in these parts. Last night in Uskudar, I witnessed a group of 20-somethings on the street kicking towards a cat, trying to stop it from arching toward their full-grown leashed pitbul. The cat, undeterred, leaped and latched on to the pitbulls face and began to violently backpedal on the stunned canine's throat. They eventually punted the cat off with a few kicks, but they had to chase after it to get it well away from the dog.

With cats like these, its necessary to have a gun. You might look into getting a gun yourself when you get here, in case you find yourself in the unpleasant circumstances of a cat latched onto your face.

Apology accepted Bulgogi Boy. Great to see Entrailicus has done the decent thing!

Nice new avatar Entrailicus! And nice of you to accept BB's apology on my behalf - you really really wish you were me don't you? Understandable I suppose....

Anyway what's with all the sarky responses to BB's original post? I know some of you have been here a long long time but I am sure you didn't know everything about Turkish culture before you arrived.

BTW BB should you crave bulgogi you can get it (for a price) in Istanbul at a restuarant behind the Blue Mosque, I had some a couple of weeks ago and while it wasn't top quality bulgogi, it made a welcome change from kebabs. Don't know about Ankara as I have only been there once sorry....

I wasn't being sarky, I was being funny. Trying to be funny. But it requires a sense of humour from the other party too.

Speaking of silliness, anyone been by the airport along the road to Yeşilky? They're dismantling an Afghani plane-- apparently it skidded off the runway and the Afghani government said they had no money to deal with it, so the Turks are stripping it for parts, and the rest, I hear, they're planning to make into razors...

And in other news, my son has just said 'goo' 2 times. He's very advanced!

Was he trying to say go or git? Which language is dominant?
