Back to original post for a moment . . .

I signed up with Literacy Volunteers of America. They do some training and give you a certificate. Free if I recall., but that was about 17 years ago. Also, it gets some practice under your belt before you head out. Though the program is/was literacy there was also a lot of people who really just wanted conversational skills. Mostly immigrants or foreigners studying at US universities.

Not the same a major expensive certificate - but gives you a good idea of what it is all about - and some experience.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have begun my online course and actually will be helping to teach English at one of our local churches with a large Spanish population. I've got a copy of Interchange (3rd edition series) and it seems very good as well.
