Have there been any reports of this in the Japanese media or are foreingers only good for drug trafficking? |

I obviously don't know all the details, but the fact that the police let the suspect get away in his bare feet while they were in the middle of questioning him sure doesn't do much to help their reputation.
Quote: |
The suspect, Tatsuya Ichihashi, fled barefoot from the condo in the city of Ichikawa when several police officers visited it to question him on Monday night after the language school the woman worked for contacted them to say they had been unable to reach her.
Ishihashi escaped from the scene despite the presence of the police officers, the police said. |

That's horrible. I feel really sorry for her family.
Just how incompetent is it possible for Japanese police to get? How the hell does someone 'escape' from a fourth floor appartment when the police are there?? For Christ's sake. |

No kidding. Usually when a suspect with bare feet on the 4th floor of a building escapes in the middle of police questioning, it usually means he was let go. Maybe this creep is yakuza, connected to the local chief. |

Wait...I thought that it was illegal to work outside of Nova's office buildings. I remember that from when we were applying. You are not allowed to continue relationships with students outside of Nova. So why was she going to this guy's house to teach him? Isnt that strange for a Nova student?
Awful story though...kinda scary... |

My parents are gonna go crazy when they read this in the morning papers. Glad I didn't tell them about the weirdo stalker guy the other week. They'd probably get me to haul ass back to Britain.
I'm guessing she was probably a bit broke and was just trying to make a bit on the side without going into the "dangerous" hostessing industry.
Has this kinda thing ever happened to non-British EFL teachers in Japan. I've only ever seen the stories about Lucie Blackman and now this poor girl. |

I don't think there has been any suggestion that the suspect was a Nova student. |

One report said that Nova denied he was one of their students. Possibly he was a student she found through findateacher.com or similar and unrelated to Nova. Lots of Nova teachers have other jobs, private students etc. Legally I don't think Nova has a leg to stand on there, and they know it.
I feel terrible for the girl and her family, it brings back memories of Lucy Blackman as well.
Going to a male student's house for a private lesson was something I made a conscious decision never to do, as I felt there was a small chance I could be putting myself in a risky situation. This really reinforces that conviction. |

If you are referring to NOVA's contract clause of non-fraternization in any form, that's been beaten in court. NOVA keeps the stupid clause in their contracts anyway, despite union insistence.
If you mean it's illegal to have a second job or do private lessons on your own, wrong again. |

This thread is about the tragic death of a foreign English teacher in Japan.
I just deleted a posting that was off-topic and would recommend there be no more.
This thread will not be used to satisfy unrelated personal agendas.
Given what transpired to cause this thread's existence, it would be a very bad idea to post anything that could be considered inappropriate or disrespectful of the feelings of others. |

About 5 years ago, an male American English teacher was beaten on the street by a gang, pulled into their car, and beaten to death inside. They tossed his body out onto the street. This happened in Kawasaki City, just south of Tokyo.
In recent years, a Nigerian man and a couple of Russian girls were murdered in Roppongi.
By the way, there's a big story about the murdered British teacher running on the local Tokyo news as I'm typing this. The story is getting covered here. |
