John,
you might notice that in my post I referred to Borat as 'it', so it was clear I was referring to the film, not the character, but nice to know you laughed at it, rather than take offence.
Regarding teaching people in your country how not to be Borat themselves, that is simply not possible when they are working in their own countries.
In that case, it is only those who visit them who can do a 'Borat'. |

Not true here in Costa Rica. American and European businesses are setting up factories and call centers in this country. Costa Ricans who apply for jobs at these companies have to learn how to behave the way that Americans or Europeans behave in the office (not the Costa Rican way), and how to do business the American or European way (not the Costa Rican way).
Of course, the Costa Rican way is not as extreme as Borat, but still certain types of normal behavior here are not acceptable to Americans/Europeans. |

That is a good point.
But I do think Guty's right about most cases. Plus such factories and call centers are subject to local laws, and it seems to me that the degree to which Western owners can 'make them behave' is limited more to rewarding and punishing for good/poor production rather than their attitudes towards Western values. Still, in American satellite nations, de facto colonies, their power is probably relatively greater than, say, Russia or India. |

Yes, there is some reward/punishment for production, as there is anywhere. However, there are also things like this: ageism against women is systemic in Costa Rica. A Costa Rican woman over forty who loses her job rarely will be able to get a new job. However, call centers hire women of all ages, if they speak English well. Other younger call center employees, both male and female, may find it hard to accept the older woman as their equal, but the company requires them to do so. |
