Several points not brought up

1) In Cancun and as you get closer to Belize, they are more familiar with Afro-Caribbean Culture.

2) The 16-25 set LOVE Hip-Hop and Reggae music while older generations like Rock and White genres. In a classroom setting this might help build bridges.

3) Knowing what I know from 'guy talk' with Mexican men, as a Black WOMAN (especially if you're young), you will probably get hit on more than White women, because you're more 'exotic' than a white or brown woman. Try to think of it as Machismo combined with curiosity rather than any kind of intentional racially-motivated harrassment. The same would hold true for any woman with an 'exotic' ancestry.

Twelvetongue, thanks for making me snort-laugh by myself in front of my computer like a crazy person. Now can you tell us what exactly is the White genre of music? Does it come with an instructional dance video? Details, please.

I have a best friend here in Mexico who is taking me to a laguna in Oaxaca near Puerto Escondido. His explanation of the people there was "THey are black, Meekie...I mean BLACK! BLacker than YOU!" I can't wait to see these "black mexicans", who are really ignored in Mexican history.

I've been to the Lagunas de Chacahua, a very very beautiful place by the way you'll enjoy it.
I was there in July, the rainy season, and the only access is by boat because the road gets washed out. I was with my husband, then boyfriend and we were waiting at the boat taxi stand for others to come to fill up the boat so we could be on our way. The boat driver we were talking to kept calling my husband gero. Now for those of you who haven't met him, that's a really strange thing so someone to call him. Laughing At that time I didn't notice anything special about this guy, ecept that he was a head taller than most Oaxacans. Finally after waiting more than two hours, the driver agreed to take us with no other passengers I sat up in the healm, facing backwards, my husband on the next seat facing me, and the driver in the back (operating the outboard). From this vantage point, with both the driver and my husband in my line of vision, it hit my why he kept calling him gero. Next to this guy he was really gero! Obviously I've never met Meekie, but the population is not the darkest people I've ever seen, there has obviously been some intermixing in the population. Very Cuban or Brazilian looking though. There are also some great music and traditional dances in that region.
I'm sure you will enjoy the trip immensely!

Hahaha, that seems really fun. Yeah, I am your typical African American as far as black skin tone. I saw some black Mexicans in Veracruz, and they were pretty dark. Here in the Mex they also have some "Children of Mexico" posters everywhere and I saw two with kids from Chacahua...pretty African American looking...not too dark, not too light. But, either way, I'm just happy to see another side of Mexican culture! And, as a person of African decent, it really makes me excited to think that I might be some people who share an experience of being darker-hued in the Americas!!

So, how was the food there? Where did you stay?? My friend is saying that we might need to sleep in tents. Did you do that?? Sorry fo the questions, just excited!

Actually, we did sleep in tents, but it was a camping trip, we are avid campers! Laughing
It's been many years since I was there, but there were a few cabaas for rent, possibly more now. Most of the visitors come on a day trip from Puerto Escondido, arriving around 11am and leaving around 5pm, outside of those hours the place was nearly deserted (but I sepect Semana Santa is busier). I don't really remember the food much sorry, basically a palapa bar-restuarant serving up the catch of the day. One of those places where you just ask what they have rather than ask to see the menu. Make sure you get up early what I remember most about the place was the sunrise--spectacular!
Oh, you are making me want to pack up and head down there right now!
Let us know how it was when you get back.

I am a big-nosed, bald, short, olive-skinned Armenian/Italian American--I know I will stand out, but I love it. Dont worry about racism, go with the flow, things will work out in the end. Self-respect is the solution.

This comes up from time to time. Here's an article about immigrants from the Costa Chica in California

Interesting that other Latino children said the afro-mexicanos "weren't Mexican"

Here in DF we occasionally see a black person but I usually assume, just as many Mexicans do, that the person is Jamaican or American. I did come across a Rosta man but learned he was South African.
My initial foray in Mexican culture actually originated from my interest in a small group of mixed blood Belizeans who live near Dangria, its principal city in the south. This group were descendants of a slave ship that got blown off course and got shipwrecked nearby. After nearly 300 years the Negroid features have merged with native indigenous groups (Mayans) to produce dark skinned Belizeans. The ethnic group is mostly known for its unique basketweaving techniques. The groups name is Garifuna.

Hi or82 and salsera_africana,
I am an African-Canadian woman in Toronto planning on moving to Mexico (possibly Queretaro) in the fall, and I would like to hear more about your experiences as a visible minority.

I have travelled quite a bit, and have grown accustomed to stares, expecially, with my natural, kinky hair. But, what are some of the negative experiences that I should prepare myself for?

Also, in general, how do you like your lives there? Two things I'm worrying about are taking public transportation, and being out at night (because it's inevitable). How are these situations?

I'm sure I could benefit greatly from your experiences.... thanks!

La reina

Here's an interesting article on how Mexicans view Obama's nomination and their own issues with race:

Wikipedia has an article on African-Mexicans but as you will see, it is tagged as needing help....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Mexican

That being said, I have to admit one thing I miss about the States (esp the NY-area) are all the different colors, and languages... and I thought Arizona was bad!
