Cant find a job where you live. Leave your country of origin. Find a job in Saudi- with no qualifications for teaching for a lot of you guys. Save money that you never dreamt of in your country of origin. Complain about the 500 SR you have to pay for the Iqama. Then complain about this stupid passport issue.
You are never stuck in Saudi. Get a multiple visa, turn in your Iqama, and keep your d**** n passport with you. All of this for a drink or whatever in Bahrain. You dont like it, get the h**** out of Dodge.

But wait! I have read the "official" advice of the U.S. government is never to surrender your passport to anyone. Why does the U.S. government not challenge this policy?
I was thinking of looking for a job in Saudi Arabia ... |

Hi,
I have a BA majoring in English Literature, TESL, and Middle East Studies. I am also certified as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, Microsoft Certified Professional, and A+. I have about 9 years experience, five of which in the USA teaching both native speakers and immigrants, teaching ESL , curriculum development, and computer assisted instruction.I also have few years experience working with computers and networks.
I am looking for a job preferably in Saudi Arabia. I think it is helpful to mention that I am a US citizen. My studies were completed in the US.
If you have a job opening where you work, I would like to hear about it. |

U.S. passport is highly prized!
It depends who is this anyone?
But the US official statement is: Do not surrender your passport to anyone other then a government official.
Now, it depends on how you interpret the government official? Thats may be why the US government does not challenge the policy of SA government for holding your passport, because it is a foreign government official, also, the US government does not want to loose its political and economical interests in SA!
Residents working in Saudi Arabia generally must surrender their passports while in the Kingdom. The sponsor (normally the employer) obtains work and residence permits for the employee and for any family members. Family members of those working are not required by law to surrender their passports, though they often do. Residents carry a Saudi residence permit (Iqama) for identification in place of their passports. The U.S. Embassy and Consulates General in Saudi Arabia cannot sponsor private American citizens for Saudi visas. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1012.html
I know that some of the US military people in SA do not surrender their passports to SA government! |

What about Paul in Saudi? He's stuck here. (You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave.)

Not everyone can get a multi. And some of us with multis have to surrender our passports when we're back in KSA.
The passport issue is just one example of the many infringements of our (natural) rights that we endure when we come here. It makes you feel uneasy but you just get on with it, counting down the days and adding up the Riyals. |

Even Northrop Grumman, an American defense contractor, holds everyone's passsports in Saudi. I think it's simply a matter of whether or not you can trust your employer. Most of them are okay.
Besides, your passport may be safer with your employer than elsewhere. |

I know some Americans find it bizarre and shocking, but US law does not actually apply outside that country's borders. |

More or less what I say about my 'home' country, Australia: "why the hell be so crazy to go to work there? They can keep their desert, their crappy pay for ESL teachers, I do NOT need it!" |
