I just have a quick question. I'm here on a tourist visa now, but I'm going to switch to a student visa. I want to give some private English lessons and my Chinese friend told me that I wouldn't need a work visa because I would only be working part-time. Is this true? If I do really need a work visa, what are the chances of getting caught giving private lessons without one? |

Come on!!! This is a strange question. You are doing some part-time tutoring, how is anyone going to find out? If they did find out would they care? Of course not. |

I've never heard of anyone getting busted for that. You'd think if it were a big deal that someone would have made a post in the last few years that I've been hanging out here. |

For private tuition, you won't be required to have a Z visa. |

Your Chinese friend is correct: as a STUDENT you are NOT SUPPOSED to work, and as a TEACHER you are NOT SUPPOSED to study...
But rules are not always enforced; your friend is wrong in saying that PART-TIME workers need a work visa: in fact you need a visa to be hired in ANY capacity, and not many are welcome to work part-time.
Your friend probably wants you to join a training centre that has part-time vacancies. Well, they can hire you full-time and you might still have enough time to study although it would be difficult to not have a clash of different timetables. |

now, hypothetically, if you happen to be teaching a son of some government official and he decides to not like you ...or if this son tells his father you've taught a bit about geography and that Taiwain does not belong to China ..busted or deported ....but then i myself have heard only a very few stories about those who've actually had to be helped to the plane

If you have income from that "tuition", you'll always need to have a Z or Residency Permit for the purpose to work.
Peace to our ideas of surviving in China
and
cheers and beers to our quality of teaching |
