What cities would you recommend starting out in China? Nothing to remote.

Cities NOT recommended:
- Lhasa (because it is Chinese-occupied territory, and thus a sensitive
place still off limits to expat personnel);
- Kashgar: Ditto, with many curfews declared all around the year;
- Shatoujiao Zhong-Ying Jie: You won't be allowed to cross the line
between Shenzhen and this village between Shenzhen and Hong
Kong for no reason at all. It's simply off limits to any foreigner!
- And in the same vein: there still are regions and localities where
foreign nationals are not allowed in; for instance Huaihai in Hunan!

Still a lot of places where you can apply for jobs though...

Some places where people work
Chengdu, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Nanjing, Shanghai, Beijing, Qingdao, Dalian, Harbin.

You could get a guide book and see which cities you like and then look for jobs there.

OR look at job, see which you like and then see which city you like best.

OR if you've got the time, money and patience, hop on a plane and travel and then see which city you like best.

I really advise you to visit the school first before signing the contract. Your idea of a state of the art school is probably different that your future employeers.

The cities on the coast are the best, from Dalian right on down to Shen Zhen.

I'm currently serving my second consecutive sentence, errrr, term of employment in Dalian. It's a comparatively smallish city by Chinese standards, but it is fairly modern. A nice place to live, and there is not as much pollution as in some other cities. I've heard the same of Qingdao and Kunming, but not having been there yet I couldn't say. Unfortunately there's not much of historical/cultural interest here, but one can't have everything.
