Salaries for english teachers used to have a 250,000-per-month minimum established by law.
What law was that? I don't think you are correct here. We foreigners are entitled to make at least as much as a Japanese person who does the same work. That's about all.
Now that some places claim only the hours you put in the classroom in order to label you (to the government eyes, anyway) as FT or PT, they can dip as low as 180K. I've seen even lower for FT work!

AFAIK, only Nova demands 40 contact hours per week from its teachers-- and NOVA's teachers tend to quit ASAP.
One of the other Big Four requires more than the PT time of <29.5 hours per week (can't recall what it is). And, NOVA is pretty much counting the seconds you are in the classroom, plus a portion (and ONLY a portion) of the time you are out as the total work time. I don't think it totals 40 hours per week.

The only silver lining in this cloud is that nonAmerican foreigners can often self-sponsor their visa
Not sure where you were going with this one. Anyone who has a work visa for a year can "self-sponsor", but you must have that year in! Starting out on "self-sponsorship" is not the way it works. |

I personally know an American who has "self-sponsored" for years.

sethness must be thinking of the working holiday visa not being available to Americans. Why would only Americans not be allowed to self-sponsor? That wouldn't make any sense.
