| No Stephen-that is hired from the UK pay. Local hire is even worse. |

| If you are hired for the British Council you either have a job with the Council in the UK, and are seconded throughout the world, or are hired by the individual branch. Although the second jobs may be advertised internationally, you are not on the British Council payscale with pension rights and so on. |

| Pay rates are low at the BC in Middle East. whether you are employed from UK or local. Local rates are even lower. In most BC centres you can join the pension scheme. In summary the BC is not an attractive option because the pay and benefits are too low. |

Very interesting. When I was in Barcelona, the local BC was one of the most sought after jobs, because the pay scale was quite high for the local market.
Teachers who I've known who have worked for the BC in Bogot and Santiago de Chile have spoken similarly in favour of it. When there was a British Council here in Quito, it had a good rep.
Maybe it's just in the middle east that it seems not to compare well to other local options?
Anybody worked at the BC somewhere in Asia?
Best,
Justin |

| I work with a teacher who worked for BC in Colombia for years-the stories he tells about it are apalling. Teacher pay in Barcelona is apalling so I doubt BC could pay as poor. Have a look at the vacancies section on the BC website and work it out yourself. |

As far as thrifty is concerned all EFL pay is atrocious, so we can hardly expect the British Council to get pardoned.
EFL pay in Barcelona is pretty poor considering, but it is still double the wages for working in a bar, let alone a chip van. |

You are showing your age. TEFL pay in Barcelona is not much more than other unskilled work like bar work.

| Not all TEFL pay is atrocious-a defence company from the North of England pay quite well. |
BAE pay quite well, but that hasn't stopped you moaning!
In general however EFL pay at best is the same pay other teaching/academic staff get; and in Turkey or Thailand that isn't a great deal of money, and where it is a decent amount of money for the cost of living or lifestyle as in Western Europe, then there is oversupply.

There's a fixed minimum salary by convenio for EFL work in Spain, and most bar work used to pay near the minimum salary, which is about 60% of the EFL minimum salary. Considering massive unemployment in Spain I doubt if bar work salaries have gone up a great deal.
The basic problem in Barcelona is that there are loads of native English speakers wanting to work there, and even for the crappy minimum salaries there are loads of people wanting to fill the jobs. |
