Has anybody had, or know of, any experience of sending personal household items, wall clocks, clothes, books etc back to the UK?

I sent 150kg of parcels "back home' to Europe in 10 X 15 kg parcels using the Saudi postal system.

They all arrived within 8 days.

The only criterium being that the postal guys will want to look inside the boxes to be sure that nothing "forbidden" is being sent through the post.

In comparison, a single letter took 8 weeks to arrive from the West.

I have no hesitation in recommending the postal service out of the KSA

I was thinking more along the lines of cargo -I am moving back to the UK and want to take quite a few things with me. Mainly books that I have been bringing with me over the years but some household stuff. It will be at least 3-400kg, maybe more.

What was the cost of sending them by Saudi Post? Can't have been cheap.

Why not check with shipping companies? Check with them how much they charge per KG for Uk. I rebember 2/3 years ago it was around SR4.5 /KG if your stuff is more than 100 200 kG, plus the insurance fees if you opt for it.
I did send my staff using 6ft container, and my big headache was mainly with my books, the first shipping company asked me to provide a clearance letter from the Saudi Ministry of information, because he said I have got more than 5 boxes of books. I decided to try another shipping company and they advised me not to declare the books, and suggested we put the books first in the container and then fill the container with other household stuff to cover the books. Also, if you have any machine or electrical generator you have to declare it as well and get a clearance letter from the customs office.
The administrative side was complicated, and they obliged me to fill a form and to be signed and stamped by my employer, in this form your employer has to garanty that you have got no forbidden/illegal items in your staff, which I find it ridiculous, because it is my personal staff and my employer has nothing to do with it !!!

I'd have thought air cargo the most convenient; it's door-to-door and the price per kilo should not be a lot more than that quoted by 007 for sea cargo.

With air cargo you pay by kilo (though there may well be a 200kg minimum). With sea cargo you hire a container so you pay by cubic feet.

I agree that the postal system is efficient. Rates went up a while back though.

For larger amounts use 'Four Winds' or one of the other shipping companies. This is a VERY competitive business in KSA. Get a quote. Lots of companies around. Saudi cities all have specific ares where these businesses cluster.

What about clearance issues in the UK? Customs? Tax? Will I need an agent or could I do it myself? What would the cost be over there?

I know Kuwait is not Saudi Arabia, but maybe the same type of pallet shipping discussed here is available in Saudi Arabia, too:

You do not need any clearance issue within UK, as far as you are shipping you personal effects.
No tax for personal effects, unless if you are shipping items which are taxable and in big quantity (like cigarettes). The shipping company in SA should have their agent in UK.
Check with Kano shipping company in Jeddah or Riyadh, they have good reputation.
