Nope, I'll be confining my knocks to you and J-Pop. Laughing

What was it Churchill said?... if you aren't a J-Pop fan when you're 20, you have no heart, if you are a J-Pop fan when you're 30, you have no brain.... Wink

How long does it take for that gaijin awe and mystique-for-Japan fantasy to wear off, usually?

Maybe never!

But in general I'd say 18 months to 2 years.

For me I loved Japan right up till the minute I had a really serious problem and realised how far from home I was.

Having said that Japan felt more like home than a lot of places I've lived.

You're gonna have a great time Very Happy

Well I am 23 and I have a heart and a brain. I think I still will listen to Jpop when I'm old. It will be the kinda stuff my kids will make fun of me for - 'oldies music' hahaha.

I can't belive some thread about some kid listening to bad music has gone on for 5 pages. Kinda sums up Japan for me...sell the sizzle not the steak.

I disagree. This thread almost has it all: youthful naiivety, mature wisdom, insults, compliments, music, hope, technology, legalities, love, hate, and literal brilliance (" ...Because Japan is like Sugar: fine and fun in small doses, but not good for a steady diet." )etc.... all we need now is some sex and we got ourselves a movie. And I'm not just saying that cuz it's my thread lol Laughing

Well I must admit your humor is going to serve you well well living abroad. Just remember everything that is great and amazing in Japan (and anywhere else) is also going to equaly bad and negative aspects also, rememeber this and you will be fine.

Just stay away from the really bad JPOP Very Happy

The only really bad Jpop is the one not in my iPod, and that's not a lot. To put it a different way - I can listen to my Jpop playlist for a week straight without hearing the same song twice. Laughing

oK ok, enough about JPOP. So tell me guys and gals, what do you like about living in Japan?

Too be honest? The girls. I'm not one of those guys who tries to go and get in the pants of every japanese girl out there-I've been in a relationship for one and a half years now. I just love the fact that I can walk down the street and be treated to an absolute smorgasbord of cute, beautiful, gorgeous or downright hot women. They really help the old morale. Smile

I respect your honesty. I think the j-girls are on the back (or front) of every hetero male ESL teacher's mind. I dunno what I'm gonna do with my girlfriend here in the states when I do go to Japan, but that's a different story Confused

If by J-Pop you are referring to Chage & Aska, by all means come to Japan!

Cool

Never heard of them. Are they any good?

They are different in one respect from all of your J-Pop crushes. They have talent. They can also actually sing.

Sakamoto Kyu? ...I guess it was just one song.

The girls here are no better looking than the girls were when I lived in Barcelona or in Italy. The only difference is that they look back at me here. Laughing

While no doubt the old timers will sooner or later jump on the youngers for mentioning Japanese girls on this forum, I don't know a single guy who doesn't at least appreciate what he sees around him. Saying that, in a certain feminine way, the J-guys are attractive too. Not to me though...

Precise, I'd think carefully about coming here if you have a girlfriend back home. I'm sure you'll be wonderfully faithful and all, but the temptation can be pretty strong.

Whatever you do, good luck to you, and if you find yourself coming up Nagano way at all, PM me and we'll get sloshed and sing some karaoke. Rock n roll...

Yes. Those names I just mentioned are their given names. I'm not in Japan so I say it the way I'm used to in the West but I know how the name system is like in the orient, trust me.

And to cornishmuppet: Yes, that sounds like a plan. We'll pond the sake like no tomorrow. Very Happy

Ayumi, Nami and Namie are given names but Utada and Otsuka are family names. Ms. Utada's given name is Hikaru and Ms. Otsuka's given name is Ai.
