Seems like there isn't anyone there at the moment... either people are super busy... or really happy... So how is it out there right now? |

Anyone working in Indonesia at the moment?
Judging by the rush hour traffic (18 hours per day in JKT) I think there are millions working here, but I could be wrong. |

What I meant was is there anyone on this forum currently holding a job in Indonesia. |

I'm no longer working in Indonesia, but still like to come to this forum from time to time to see how things are going. Just out of interest really.
I'm in Bandung at the moment though, staying with my wife's family. It'd be nice to live here again, but I'm not quite sure when it will happen. |

I'm in Indonesia. Unlike some of the other users, I actually like Indonesia. I like my home country, too, but if I have to compare the benefits - I get more benefits here than there (aside from health-related things).
I think people who move here really have to come with an open mind and be prepared to change and adapt. After all, isn't that what life's about?
You should also come here with the idea of being an unofficial ambassador of your country. You'd be amazed what a bad rap foreigners get here, and it is certainly justified in some cases.
Think of it as an adventure. In any adventure, unless you're a completely fictitious character that walks away from every problem unscathed, you'll experience problems. What I can't understand, however, are those people who completely slam Indonesia. Sure, there are issues here, especially when it comes to immigration but, by and large, if you live your life wisely and try to improve yourself, it's not what people say it is.
I've had as many problems with food poisoning here as in my home country.
I've been robbed less here.
I've never been attacked here.
The insults towards me are about what I got at home. My spouse, however, gets a lot of flack being married to a foreigner.
I've been able to enjoy a MUCH better lifestyle here than there, all on a much smaller salary requirement.
I've seen lots of interesting things and met plenty of nice people. I've had complete strangers stop and give me a ride when the rain was pouring down.
If you're a big-city person, stick to Jakarta, Bandung, Bali, Surabaya, Papua and the other major locations. Even tourist destinations like Jogja may suit you.
However, based on the over-population of places like Jakarta, I don't recommend it. It's got terrible corruption, pollution and traffic problems. On the bright side, some very high-paying jobs are there, and it's easy to get foreign stuff and enjoy a Western lifestyle full of fun and debauchery (if that's your speed).
Sorry for rambling. Why did you ask, anyways? |

Ramble on... I mean it will surely be worthwhile to someone...
Oh and to your question at the end I was just asking.

Well, I had a week or so in West Papua, in Jayapura.
My experience was that it was decidely sleazy, and crowded as Jakarta is, it has a lot more social life, better places to do your shopping and a much safer environment than Jayapura.
I spoke to some indigenous folk in the city. and for my troubles, was closely followed by a couple of guys for the next two days. They would have done better in a Peter Sellers film!
I found Makassar an interesting place, but it never seems to rate a mention. |

Interesting. I wouldn't mind Bandung, as the weather there is a little cooler. |

I have to clarify why I grouped Papua with the big cities. Other than what GuruEngerish said, there's also the fact that places like Freeport are more expensive. Also, certain cities have a large foreign population, resulting in lots of foreign amenities being easy to find. |

Now isn't that spooky... this thread used to have a few posts by the Gugelhupf. It seems that when you are 'vaporised' you also become an 'unperson' just as George Orwell predicted. |
