Hi,
My work visa in my passport expires on the 30th of June 2007. I will be signing a new contract for another year & that would normally end on the 30th of June 2008. However, I want to travel around the place a bit (more). I want to avoid using up another page in my passport for a 30 day visitor visa or an extension. Do you know if work visas are issued for 13 months? The school has no problem helping me out by dating the contract to end on the 31st July 2008. They've even agreed to let me occupy the flat during that month.
Don't know if this will help: I have the little red FEC booklet.

The PSB's are authorized to issue a visa/resident permit for any period of time; within limits of course. The general rule is that that the permit/visa is issued for the length stated on the work contract. Last year my school wrote my contract to expire two months after I actually finished working, and so, my permit was for a period of 14 months. The rules are, of course, dynamic in that the PSB's can do anything they like.
Technically speaking, a foreigner, in cases as ours are allowed to have a visa /resident permit/contract for a maximum of five years.
Ask the school to write your contract for a period including your "extra" time so that you have the chance for the PSB to issue your resident permit to include that extended time. |

You can get a 2-year visa, in some cases a visa for even longer durations; however, you can't get a regular one-year term plus a holiday travelling season tacked onto it. The latter would require an extension, and those are granted on a case-by-case basis.
I am noty sure your visa will expire on the 30th June next year because the P.S.B. might stamp your passport a week earlier than on the 30th of June this year; they normally give you 365 days counting from the day of issuance. |

I have been changing job / cities each year. I am on my fourth Z visa / F.R.P..
Because I change jobs each time, my contracts have all been for less than 1 year; 10 1/2 months or 11 months (September through to mid, or end of, July).
Without exception, the PSB have, each time, given me an F.R.P. which expires 1 month beyond the expiration date of my employment contract.
Maybe it's because my F.R.P.s are for (slightly) less than 1 year?
Whatever the reason, it's very helpful for me because I do summer camps in July / August each year. |
