Anyone have any particular neighborhoods they would recommend or not recommend?

As all of Bakirkoy is a bland, non-descript shopping area, I'm not sure it makes any difference. Best place to be would be closest to the exit points.

Yenimahalle's pleasant, although the buildings are a bit on the old side (and not old in a good, delightful historical sense); it retains the atmosphere of a village, believe it or not. Atakoy-modern, widely spaced, green areas, near the airport, and with the Atrium shopping centre slap bang in the middle, but rather anonymous. However, I did spend some of my best Istanbul years getting wildly drunk with my flatmates there. Sirinevler, aka Smurf Houses, opposite Atakoy - don't touch with a bargepole. the streets toward the seafront are all much of a muchness, but you pay extra for the sea view. Incirli - yuk. Its only advantages are the large pazar and the proximity to the metro.
