Housing should be provided or at least a housing allowance. If not give that school a wide berth. |

Many people here will declare loudly that around 7 million is the absolute bottom of the barrel for salaries but in truth that is what many are offering. I asked a school named St George International what they were offering and they said 7 million....I asked if they were kidding as they start at 7am and work all day with the added responsibilities that you don't get in the language mills. Other schools that throw in the national or international tag are doing the same. Only one I have been to lately has offered much over 10 mil. So keep looking but those who are earning the big bucks are on a good wicket. |

What about the qualification?
do they really look closely what kind of diploma I have?
Because I am not a native-speaker. |

Anyone with a building and a few books can ope a school and call it 'national plus' or 'international'. The real NatPlus schools are all paying over 10M - some considerably more than that figure. The likes of St Georges is not one of them. I'm making no recommendations about working conditions but try:
BiNus
Global
Central
Bogor Raya
Tunas Muda
St. Laurensia
Sevilla
Pelita Harapan
IPEKA |

and we wonder why the wages are so low. non native speakers with high school diplomas somehow thinking they are qualified to teach. sad part is that he will probably get plenty of job offers. more than 1 ef has non-native speakers working and one even has a fillipino DOS.
lots of the so called national plus schools dont pay much because non-native speakers from other countries are standing in line to come here.... ie india, pakistan, phillipines, malaysia.......... but in fairness to them, many of them are more qualified than the bules running around here. u get what u pay for. but if your lucky, u can get paid more than you are worth. then again, teachers in my home country are often complaining of being underpaid............. and they are.
aslo wages vary widely from city to city. the wages quoted earlier were for jkt. for smaller cities like medan, solo and yogya, the wages could be considerably less. and no matter how many times i read the ef adverts, i dont think 7-8 million is enough to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle and travel throughout indonesia.
good luck in your search |

12 - 14 million would be more of a sufficient number to quote when talking about living comfortably and being able to travel... plus free cigarettes and coffee for a year. |

Those of us with girlfriends! The local ladies are expensive. 8 million? You hound-dog!
I'm starting to think about the possibility of planning to start researching into other schools in Indonesia besides EF (for when I'm done my contract). They are the most accesible, of course, but don't offer anything exceptional with their contracts.
For a certified (TESOL) native English speaker (Canadian) with 2 years teaching experience, where should I set my goals - salary wise? What schools should I persue? Unfortunately, I don't know these things and I'm not much of a social butterfly. I doubt I'll receive much info regarding this matter from my EF management! The *only* other school I've heard of is TBI. I'm assuming there has to be many more options. |
