I just found out i passed my net interview but am nearly sure i will stay where I am this year. If i decided that I want the job next year will this affect me? i.e is it too late in the game to turn it down without it affecting me negatively or do I just stay in the system??? Please give me any adivce u have. The main reason I am turning it down is from reading alot of posts on this site. The job doesnt come across in a good light at all and I think previous/current NET posts are so important given that I spent three years as a disgruntled JET in Japan.

The posts on this site are the main reason for turning the job down?!! That seems like a bizarre reason to me. Especially considering recent posts that are incredibly positive with regards to both Hong Kong AND the job!
Anne, why not give it a try and form your own opinion? |

I could be way off on this one, but it's always seemed to me that most of the happy people just aren't making any posts; they are outside somewhere, enjoying life. |

You can re-apply next year. It's hardly likely that they will refuse you if they've accepted you once.
I think you're right to assume that it's 50:50 whether you'll like the school that you end up in. And let's face it, the start-up costs of living here is so expensive, if you only do one 2 year contract here, and then leave, you won't have saved much money. |

Ditto. If people are having good experiences they aren't going to write about them. People will only come here to complain to warn others. Check out the Korea forums...it's like entering a mine field with all the negativity over there! |

Hey DK,
That's one of the major reasons I left Seoul. It was not just negativity on the Korean board, but more so the negativity being voiced by a large number of the teachers there in person.

thanks a lot for the replies. first of all my name is not Anne, and secondly I am well capable of forming my own opinion. It is true that the NET scheme is not highlighted well on this forum and I related that to how I felt on JET (very similar). I am just not willing to sign up to a system that reflects any way on the JET scheme.
thanks aain,

I wasn't suggesting that you were incapable of forming your own opinion at all. On the contrary, I was suggesting that since you had already done the hard work by being accepted, why not give it a try, and therefore be able to form an opinion that wasn't based on the views of others. Don't be so tetchy.
Sorry to hear about your unhappy JET experience, but aren't those contracts only for one year? Why re-sign twice if you were so disgruntled? |

Totally agree with what pieface has said on this thread. These kind of forums, by their very nature, nearly always tend to attract the moaners more than the happy people. And there are actually a similar number of positive posts about NET on here as negative ones.
So I'd be very wary of basing a such a decision merely or even mostly on what I'd seen on this kind of forum. Negative posts can be useful, but they shouldn't be mistaken as necessarily a complete or an accurate picture. You should take ANYTHING overly negative (or overly positive for that matter) with a huge pinch of salt.
If you really did have a bad time in Japan, aineoc, then perhaps that would be a good reason for having doubts about going to HK. Although, as pieface said, why renew your contract twice if it was so bad. Didn't you also post on this forum a few months ago recommending that someone consider going to Japan on the JET scheme, describing your 3 years in Okinawa as an "amazing experience"??
Anyway, good luck to you, whatever you decide. |

NET is a vastly superior experience. Better job in terms of being professionally challenged (and far superior rewards too) and the lifestyle is streets ahead in terms of excitement. I loved my time (also three years on JET) but coming here has been the best thing I have done. I knew many people in Japan who stayed three years despite being perpetually unhappy. One chump is still there and is half way through his 5th year! At the same time I took a year back home and I sometimes wonder how I would have handled it had I gone straight on the NET scheme from Japan. |

I agree that these boards attract a lot of nagativity but I know that the JET boards paint a pretty true picture of the job itself.
If you read my Okinawa post again you will find that I was promoting Okinawa as a PLACE TO LIVE,-if one chose the JET programme. The thing that turns me off so much is reading about how much the educational systems in HK mirror those of Japan. I chose to recontract for three years because of my love for my lifestyle in Okinawa. I dont think that this is a good thing to do ( I was very young) and I wouldnt want my lifestyle in HK to outweigh my job.
Anyhow its nice to finally have some people so positive about their time in on NET.
thanks aine |

If a school offered me a job as part of the NET scheme in HK I would jump for it without hesitation! The NET scheme in HK is one of the most reputable schemes in Asia.Give me the job I will be there in a flash. |

Some of you have something to learn about the PNET and SNET programs in Hong Kong. The woman who first wrote has some idea of what it is like here. I will try and write something tomorrow to try and clarify some idea of what the NET scheme is about in Hong Kong. Just hang in there for a day and something will be written. You'll be able to make your own decision as to whether you want to place yourself in a position offered by the Hong Kong educational. |

aeion, pm your worries and maybe we can address those directly. Hong Kong is an International City so there is a lot of opportunities to enjoy yourself. It's a pretty good gig. Just don't expect to change the world. It would take a hell of a lot to move me unless Thailand suddenly starts paying big bucks and accepting ugly people. |
