This broken record of yours is a recording of Shintaro Ishihara. It is funny how you keep bringing up this case and admitting your ignorance of its source. Ishihara is a notorious right-winger who has expressed xenophobic views often. But your attempts to tar all Japanese with this brush is equally unfair. |

I am sorry that I have not responded 2 pages ago when ravel wrote the following, but things have been busy. I don't really see ravel discussing much here anyway, so I wonder if this is even appropriate.

| Glenski I recall and read all of your PM's and posts, and appreciate all the help and advice you sent my way, I like people who are streight up like you. So okay it's a business, but if i were to promise you a cell phone as a business, you would expect to get what you are promised rght? Well the ESL business is promising cell phones and delivering two paper cups and a string. Business or not the industry has miserably failed to deliver what it advertises from what I have experienced thus far with basically all my students. If ESL is a business it's a failure in that respect too. It's a shame really that people just accept it as it is because as a product it's garbage when it need not be. |
Yes, I'm pretty "straight up" about things, even though it often gets me labeled as a gloom and doom person or as condescending or negative. I'm glad you see it as intended.
Just what image of EFL in Japan did you have again? What was promised to you, by one employer and by the EFL industry in general? Until I see that answer, it is not easy to respond. I consult with tons of people about their resumes and chances of work here, so I don't recall everyone's individual discussions. I would like to think that I told you what to expect, though, and it certainly wasn't "paper cup and strings". |

OP really has a lot to complain about
I've never had any problem of that sort in my time here, maybe I'm lucky, or maybe I don't scrutinise every moment of my day looking for incidents that seem vaguely racist.
I'm positive about my life here, and nearly everyone I meet is pleasant and positive in return.
I can't sympathise with your extreme culture shock as I never experienced any, but in relation to the hairdressers thing, just don't go into that one that won't serve you.
Find a picture of the hairstyle you like, take it into a hairdressers and let it be know you want it like in the picture. Usually that works just fine. No need to get all GRRRR I'M ANGRY AT JAPAN over things like that. |

There do seem to be more problems here with service, sometimes regardless of language ability. But some persistance helps too. I find the kinds of things the poster complains about are not a big deal. But, just talk about history here, that is when things get interesting.... |
