As the topic on where to go is locked for some reason, I thought I'd have me tuppence worth here.

Sorry about the late reaction, but this site used to let me know when there were replies.

Yes Beefer, I agree that Green Canyon is an interesting place to visit, but it is at the other end of Pangandaran, and that is exactly what I was recommending.

get away from the crowds and sleaze and spend a few days in the Batu Keras area, which includes Green Canyon and the other interesting places.

I'm still hoping that someone will let me know how things are at that end, after the tsunami. Sad

...you're right, guru. i see what you are saying- green canyon is far closer to batu keras and could easily be called " outside" of pangandaran.
still, i have a slightly differing opinion of batu keras than you do.
it is quiet. but maybe a little too quiet to actually spend any time greater than a half day or so. i also feel that it might be geared more to the surfer crowd. i don't know, thats just the feeling i always got from the place.

on another note, yes, for the most part it has recovered from the tsunami. some of the smaller setups haven't bothered to rebuild and from a visitor point of view ( i feel really bad saying this) its probably for the best as certain areas were getting that "dirty market" look to them.
and the sleaze factor is almost everywhere you go in this country but i find it easy to ignore and never saw it as a big part of the place.
but i think we can both agree that the entire area, as a whole, is a great vacation spot....and that there are lots of things to do both in and outside Wink of pangandaran.

in closing, if there is anyone out there that surfs, or would like to try it and hasn't been to batu keras, you should check it out. on a good day ( which is often) it has the longest point break (right, not left) i've seen on the south coast of java. both lessons and board rentals for the beginners are always available....actually, let me change what i said earlier...you could easily spend more than half a day there if wanted to do more than sit and relax or just walk around.

i would also like to say sorry ( to tanya in particular) as i have little doubt that it was my spat with james that got the other thread locked and that i will no longer be the catalyst in getting other peoples threads locked... i mean it this time...

aha! so that's what happened. I haven't seen a 'locked' subject before.

Thanks for the news about batu keras. I'd love to go back there and just have a week lounging, surfing, cuci mata. The little hotel I stayed at was very pleasant, except for public holidays, when families turn up and the pembantu does all the cooking on the front porch of the room. Sad

As you say, the beach and surf are for us youngun's. (I'm now mid-sixties)
