I haven't lived there but I did visit about a year ago. The first thing I noticed was the COLD! Of course, after being in Veracruz, this was a relief, not a problem. I can't say I'd want to live there but there is an interesting zocalo and some neat mountain towns nearby.

I have absolutely no idea how cold it was. It was April and I'd just taken the bus there from Veracruz, which was hot and humid. I don't think it was actually that cold, but by contrast to where I'd been, it felt quite chilly. It was warm during the day and cool at night-not a bad combination.

The place is 50 miles from mexico city. I would assume a suburb? I would also assume there would be regular bus/trains to the mexico city airport?

It's not a suburb but there are a lot of buses back and forth every day. I think there is a direct airport bus as well.

Excellent Barbacoa in the towns, and lots of hot springs to relax in! And that is all I know of Hidalgo from my one visit. Oh, and it was warm enough during the day. Cool evening - as mentioned, a nice combo.
