Can anyone recommend a place for telephone connection/internet. We are renting a line, we are having trouble with the company, they said they offer free touch tone service, meanwhile we don:t have it yet, and they haven't returned my call, and I can't use a calling card with pulse dial. We live in Kanagawa.
Thanks

Have a look in the phone book under 'line rentals' or 'telephone line rentals' and switch companies.

As for calling, get a line and, if you're in the service area, YahooBB with Yahoo Phone. It's cheaper than a calling card in almost every instance.

More details, go through the archives here or go over to bigdaikon.com and ask there/search their archives.

I also would put in a vote for the Yahoo BB phone. However, you need to get a phone line in first (NTT) and service connection to start up is incredibly slow.

I don't know if I understand your question fully, or if I will be helpful, but I went through this company:

http://www.bricks.co.jp/

They are an agent for NTT and helped me get set up for both my phone line AND ADSL.... It was free to me as well.

Good luck.

another question. We have a wireless LAN card in our laptop. Can we use Yahoo BB with this, without getting a modem? Also, do you have to pay for phone calls when you have Yahoo BB, that is, we pay a monthly rental line, but do we have to pay for calls we make in Japan? (locally)
Thanks.

I have Yahoo BB just connected as well, and its my understanding that the phone connection is made over the Internet line through Yahoo (thats why you need a Yahoo modem instead of the ASDL) and if both of you have Yahoo BB the cost of the call is FREE anywhere in the country. If only you have Yahoo the call is about 20 yen per 3 minutes as opposed to NTTs line. Calling a keitai cell phone is about half the normal rate. Calling overseas by Yahoo is about 7 yen a minute I believe.

Yahoo provides you with a modem free (at least it was for me) and overseas rates fluctuate depending on where you're calling. I think I pay 12 yen/min to Canada (U.S. is 2.5 yen/min).

I am, at this moment, using a wireless LAN with Yahoo BB. But when you sign up for their deal, you get not only the modem/transmitter but another wireless card for your PC. Useless for desktops unless you have an external PC slot i.e. meant for laptops really. I don't know if the one you have will work with the YahooBB transmitter but I don't see why not. It looks like a regular PC card to me.

Now I rent the modem including the wireless card because I figured it would take me about two years renting this before actually buying the gear off Yahoo would be cheaper and I'm likely to be on another plan by then anyway. You could get your own wireless card/transmitter but then I can't see the point in that. Not saying there isn't one, just that I can't see it Wink
