Are we all being racists now? Cause I don't like people from Luxemburg, so I can be racist against them if you need me too.

Do we need all this sniggering pathetic RACIST bok little asides on this thread, or others on this forum?

We are teachers. It is our job, to teach. In that capacity, we experience some funny things. We exchange experiences and stories. As is human nature. Some of them are funny, some of them aren't.

I did some consultancy down in Malatya recently. I looked at an English exam for primary schools and in one part it contained the phrase - "no, I amn't". I told people about this - it highlights a situation. We laugh - it's funny- Humour is important because without humour we have no perspective. I'm sure you of all people can understand this.

You unpleasant unfunny cliquey little group of foreign expats who've made your home here in this country, slapping each other on the back as you rake in the liras, with your plans of lovely holiday trips and sojourns that most natives couldn't even dream of - and think you deserve it more than them because you think you are more intelligent or cultured;sniggering at the grammar mistakes of your students; oblivious to your own racist rudeness?

Okay first of all, there is no clique on this board, as other people have accused us of. Actually, this irritates me. When people have conversed with me about subjects that I find interesting, I've always replied. I offer my opinions. We don't do anything to alienate people, and have actively welcomed new comers to the board. There's no impenitrable clique here, and other than the fact that both DMB and Yaramaz are real life (yes real people!) friends, so we do actually have some "in" jokes, I think that anyone who though we acted as though we were in some kind of gang would probably thinks so because of their own personal issues.

But where do you get off with all the ex-pat, holiday taking, lira raking in blahdy blah.

Are you a native? Do you never take holidays? Are you better than us because you're an artist? Is that it? I'm an artist too Ruenman, I'm a musician and a writer. I do (free) work for a organisation called Freemuse, and also some music magazines. I'm raking in some Liras too mate. Not as much as I'd like, but it helps me to save up so I can start putting some records out.

But racists huh? That's a big word there Ruenman. I'd suggest you be more careful with it it too.

Racism

Quote:
Racism is any form of bigotry, prejudice, violence, oppression, stereotyping or other socially divisive practice whose primary basis is the concept of race.

I can't see how DMB's comments come close to this, but I can see how using the term "ex-pat" in a derogitary fashion, and making negative assumptions about how we act and our way of life based on the fact that we are not natives to this country.....? You see where I'm going with this Ruenman, don't you?

Does that mean I can't wear the gang colours anymore? And the turf wars are off?

For me, this forum is a place to get information and advice and have a laugh. Some of the people who contribute write really well and I like that.
Sometimes its also a good place to let off steam about a culture that for me, as for others, can be confusing and exasperating.
I'm sure there must be sites on the great big web for foreigners in the UK and other countries to have a rant about our confusing and exasperating cultures too.
The one thing that irritates me here is I occasionally detect a slight sexism from some posters. Don't like the corned beef curtains comments much. But I figure this forum's like a pub - you might not like a couple of the regulars propping up the bar but you have to admit they can be entertaining.

I do apologise, it's more of an obsession about what I can get past the swear filter. But I shall try not to do anything too sexist in future.

But jokes about Arabs commiting fornication with camels and goats, apart from being in poor taste, are surely 'racist', just as 'corn beef curtains' might be considered 'sexist' (although I don't understand the reference)

I was thinking today about a class many years ago in which I asked the students to say what they might give their sweetheart on Valentine's Day. One boy very seriously announced that he would give his girlfriend a 'bucket of flour'.

Naturally I was surprised at such an unromantic gift and asked him to explain why. It turned out that he meant a 'bouquet of flowers'. Pronunciation had transformed the romantic intention to the absurdly prosaic. We laughed as we learned.

Look at your laffs before you tell them. Many jokes are based on cruelty and prejudice.

Clique-y? Ooh! I've never been in a clique before. Is this what it feels like?

The only time anyone got alienated on this forum was that eyeliner guy (not you, Baba, the other one) but he was kind of asking for it...

Runeman, I mentioned nothing about fornication. My ex students used to go to the desert and sleep with their camels. It's a fact. Nothing racist and nothing to do with sex!!!!

Runeman obviously has hot and wild camel sex on his mind if he reads that from your simple statement, dmb.

Justme, I've ordered gang colours for Ender. What size is he now? Do you prefer snaps or velcro?

I have felt outside sometimes here since I do not understand the British jokes being a yank and all.

And also since I have stated that I am a muslim sometimes I feel as if my statements I make here are being judged or ...?

Even though I am not a card carrying member Shocked Razz I still like it here just to read what others who live here are experiencing.

However for the record I do drink and I do pray although not five times a day and I am not a perfect muslim. Wink

I'm a Canadian so I understand nothing that is going on here.

Laura777, don't worry about feeling judged because I think there is a wide spectrum of opinions here amongst the posters, so even if some seem critical, there will always be those who support you. It's like any given slice of society.
