Ok the title is a little misleading but it had to be short and sweet. Basically UI applied for westage. I know I have an outstanding application. I have 1+1/2 years of experience teaching 3 glowing recommendatins and an great interview on top of that.
There seems to be one thing in my way and it may kill the whole thing. I had 3 recommendations from the same job and they wanted from two different jobs ut they also said the person had to talk about your teaching ability and since I only had job it can only come from one place right? So anyway during the interview he suggested my oxford teacher (a sign that I was doing well since if I bombed the interview why suggest such a thing). Anyway I contacted the school and explained my situation. I also explained that westgate sends out an e-mail to the reference person so if they contact my instructor not to just say write a reference letter but just give a name title and e-mail to me so westgate can contact them.
So what happens? I get an e-mail from my instructor with a reference letter attached.
So I thanked him and kindly explained that oxford made a mistake and I just needed his information so westgate could contact him, thanked him again, and asked him to fill out the online form when they e-mail him. So that's were I am now and i'm freaking out because I have no idea whether or not he filled out the reference form .
So for all those who worked at westgate before do you think I can make it even if the guy doesn't fill out the reference letter. I mean in all honesty I think since it's not my fault and in light of everything else they should hire me anyway.
I'm serious did I mention I also soeak intermedaite/advanced level japanese with over 600 kanji and never once lived in Japan? And I speak korean. Plus I DO have 3 references just all from one school but they're all my bosses you know.
I'm freaking out here. If I go to Japan first I have to pay for the ticket plus do a visa run when I do find a job.
I should look for other work work now but I want to start in august and there's nothing that starts in august as of yet besides westgate (which starts in september).
I'm resisting the urge to e-mail my contact person to see if the guy filled out the reference form.
:continues freaking out:

It seems that you are a high maintenance applicant. I wouldn't hold my breath. If I did the hiring at Westage, and based on what you've written in this thread and in the past on this board, I would not hire you. I suggest looking elsewhere for employment. If you disagree, enjoy continuing to stress out. |

If you were hiring for a company your company would fail. Seeming how you turn down qualified applicants.
You make me remember why I stopped coming to this board. The not to bright are in the majority and the bright are in the minority. Unfortunately the not so bright are the ones are always the first to reply to messages.
In the past what have I written on this board let's see. How long have I even written on this board. I wrote one message last week maybe in the past year or so?
What have I written on this board. hmmm *does search*
wow I posted ONCE according to this search. Which 1) shows I haven't been on this board in so long that the previous topics i've posted in have een deleted. 2) your statement now has no credibilty. Because I haven't really posted on this board for you to make any sort of judgement. But I bet you're the type to past judgement on someone after 1 second and it's negative.
Thank goodness you're not hiring anyone I would feel sorry for the company that has you as a hiring director. Based on what you've written on this board in the past i'm saddend that you are even in another country. I pray you are not from my country as I would cry at the possiblity that you are someone representive of what I am like. Every time I see a truly rude post I look at the poster and there's your name. You must've paid someone to hire you. |

The application process is very clear. Different companies want different things. The easiest thing is to give the companies what they ask for. Most applicants do so, without too much problem. It seems like you are having problems meeting those basic requirements. It's very easy to find someone else that can fulfill them. That is why I suggest looking for another job.
Hint: Give employers what they want. Simple. If you do so, you probably will succeed in moving to the next step of the interview process. |

It's not really in your control. You've done everything you can. You should just wait now. I'm sure that the person from Oxford will have the sense to reply to an e-mail from Westgate considering that you told them to expect one. Just calm down and wait. You'll have plenty of time to get your tickets and visa sorted out.
In answer to your question though, whether Westgate will hire you on the back of just one reference, I'm not sure. Us teachers weren't privy to this kind of info.
Good luck with it though. |

Well, I agree with canuck on this one, AnneO, I have seen alot of people in Japan with your attitude and they are usually the first ones to jump a contract or fired.
Im sure Westgate seen this and thats why, they wont offer you a job. I think its also the reason JET turned you down. IMO go to Korea and teach and take your attitude with you. |

Harsh but fair. You have to calm down and get some perspective. I cannot begin to imagine what would happen if they moved you to a quiet little country town in rural Japan. |

You came to THIS forum looking for support and perhaps reassurance????? This forum isn't as bad as others I read, but remember foreign expats are on this forum and foreign expats in Japan are not exactly known for offering support (or even a kind word) to their fellow compatriates(sp?).
Well, I can understand how you must be feeling, scrambling to find a job. It is one of the most stressful times for anyone. Who doesn't freak out a bit? But give yourself some credit--you realized you were missing a reference and you contacted your Oxford teacher who immediately emailed you a reference letter (too bad it wasn't what you needed). Give yourself credit because your instructor remembered you and responded to you in the first place....I'd be in trouble if I had to get a reference from any of my professors--that was so long ago! And references from past jobs would be a bit difficult to dig up as well.
My advice would be to forward the attached reference letter to the Westgate people. Maybe they will be happy to have it because it saves them the hassle of contacting your professor.
Anyway, I wish you the best.

Maybe your problem is one of mathematics. My search shows that 21 posts from you are still available for viewing.
Canuck's comments are valid IMO. Time for you to consider other sources of employment. |
