Has anybody done the trip from Bangkok to Saigon (or vice versa) and wants to contribute some tips on the best way to do it? I arrive in Bangkok in June and plan to see thailand for a bit and then make my way through Cambodia (hopefully see Angkor Wat) and down to HCMC from there.
Two questions regarding that:
- What is the best (i.e the most fun, stimulating, "touristy") way to do it? Buy a motorbike? Take the bus? Other?
- Approximately how much would something like that cost? I know there are travel organizations like G.A.P that will take you to these places in small groups, but to me (and maybe I'm wrong) they seem overpriced. |

If you take the Trat crossing do no and I mean do not take the bus from Kong (it's bloody brutal) to PP take the ferry to Sinoukville (sp?) and then catch the bus to PP (paved all the way) and then from there to HCMC. |

I once took a minivan from Pattaya to Trat for about $15USD and then hired my own taxi at the Cambo border. The taxi cost about $70USD all the way to PP, and was about an eight hour trip. It was comfy though, and we drank beer the whole way. The driver stopped anytime you needed to pee and the mountains in Western Cambo were incredible. We crossed four or five crystal clear rivers on barges powered by car engines!
From PP to the VN border is about $35USD in your own taxi, and then from the border to HCMC is another $25 in your own taxi.
This would be another option I would like to try sometime. http://www.seat61.com/Cambodia.htm
Good luck! |

Very nice way to travel. I'll look into that when I get over there. Anybody taken the trip by motorbike? Or is the trip too long for that? |
