Have any of you heard of TEFLone?

http://www.teflone.com

See, I applied at Shane ( I know, I know)and sent them my resume (via their email and website), but I got an email back from this TEFLone (with a TEFLone email) giving me information on the school and asking me for my resume again as well as a copy of my passport and university degree.

Now obviously, I am NOT emailing him a copy of my passport and degree, but I'm a little upset. I mean I knew trickery was involved in Taiwan, but I wasn't expecting it like this? Well, maybe I was, I don't know...

Is it normal (I know it's not normal for people to ask for copies of passport and degree emailed to them...unless something is shady) for me to send my email to the school and then get an email back from some "placement service" ?

Or am I being paranoid??

Well, thanks anyway

Bre

OK, so I did some researching and the name on the email seems legit, but like I asked above...

is it normal to email these schools copies of your passport and degree? And if you do (or have) will writing on it still help from ID theft or is that not true either?

I feel like such an idiot asking this, but I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing...

As far as I'm aware its normal. Sadly, there are people who simply don't tell the truth about nationality, degree etc and still expect to be hired when they arrive.

The real mark of a scam is when they ask for the originals.

You are right to be concerned by ID theft. When I send only my C.V I never include my d.o.b or place of birth. Fraudsters often ned these two pieces of information to create a new ID.

Shane have a better reputation than most, so you should be ok.

Breezy did you apply to Shane directly or did you apply to an ad placed by Teflone in the name of Shane? Teflone states that they are free for teachers which means that the schools pay. I would be really surprised if Shane passed your direct contact onto a recruiter who then recruits you for a job with their school!!

TeacherTim is right, getting a copy of the front page of your passport is a pretty standard and reasonable request. It is the best way for a school to verify your name, nationality, and DOB, as some people are not so honest about these things sometimes.

I would never send my original documents to anyone other than the visa office directly. Not so much because of the identity theft issue but more so due to concern that they may get lost. The school does not need your originals until they are applying for your visa so keep them until then and send them a copy first.

and so is them asking for a copy of your degree. It is to ensure:

a) you have one
b) it is from a University that the Taiwan govt recognizes
c) that the spelling of your name on your degree matches with that of your passport. If there is any difference or ambiguity, you will have big problems when you get to Taiwan. Such mistakes are more common than you might think.

If they see a problem with your documents in advance you will be able to resolve them with ease while you are still at home. That's a lot better than realizing you have trouble when you get here.
