How long since Mt. Fuji has blown its top anyway? It is ruled as dead or sleeping by scientists? Someone told me it was just sleeping?

That's what they said about Mount St. Helens.

Maybe it comes from growing up under the shadow of Mt. Rainier near Seattle, which has been overdue for an eruption for about 100 years, but I couldn't be less concerned about Mt. Fuji erupting. Worrying about dormant volcanoes blowing their top is an exercise in futility. Sure every once in a while one goes but the chance it'll be the one you're near is slim to none. Earthquakes make more sense to be worried about... although I'm too stupid to worry about them. Razz

Last time a decent-sized volcanic eruption happened in Japan, Miyake-jima in 2000, we had weeks of warning that it was going to erupt, which included swarms of small earthquakes, about 10 a day of which we could feel in Kanagawa where I was working at the time, so probably Tokyo as well. Big earthquakes are totally unpredictable though- they can predict them now I hear, but only seconds in advance, which isn't terribly helpful.

Wikipedia says Fuji-san last erupted in 1707, by the way. It is also classified, surprisingly, as active, but with a low risk of eruption.
