Schmooj is right - but I`ll help another English person as I am assuming from your name which means Chelsea Anyone But United (as in Man U) that you are English.

There are other posts on this but in a nutshell - when you quit your job your employer must give you a letter verifying that you had a contract with them and worked for them for them for such and such a period of time. Your employer is obliged by law to give this to you but I won`t call it a `letter of release` as there seems to be differing opinions regarding what this letter`s title is.

Get that letter asap - it doesn`t matter whether the employer is a small eikaiwa or a big chain school or whatever. One of my former employers was lazy and would not send it to me (could not be bothered, which summarised their work ethic). I had fulfilled every condition of my contract and before it had come to an end had given this person more than adequate notice that I would not be signing on for another year.

Finally I called my ex boss, left a polite but firm message saying I would go to Immigration to ask about the letter, and hey presto I received it very quickly through the post. My letter says - cafebleu (real name actually) worked at such and such a school for one year and fulfilled every condition of her contract of employment.

I haven`t had to go to Immigration about my visa as that does not finish for some time but I will have to take this letter along with other necessary documents when I do.
