Hi. I'm talking to an employer right now who wants me in Japan in 2 weeks (or sometime in early June) . He said that they sponsor visas. I forgot to ask him how in the world is he supposed to get me a visa in such a short amount of time. I'd really rather not go on a visa run.

If this is Wishborn then it is possible that they want you to come over before you get your visa and start working for them illegally. You are aware of the penalties for working illegally in Japan, right?

No, this is a different company and I will not work illegaly. What I was asking is if it's possible to get a visa in such a short amount of time.

That's up to immigration. I wouldn't count on it, but it is possible. Ball's in your court Sonny-Jim.

It's possible but not probable, right? From your experience, what is a realistic amount of time that it takes to get a visa?

Personally I would give it a month. But then again, who knows how long it could be. You could of course apply for one and ask immigration how long it could take. Then get back to your company and tell them how long it could be before you get your visa and don't let them twist your arm into coming sooner.

Right, because if I came without a visa it would be illegal, I know. It's not possible to get a working visa while in Japan, right? I would ultimately have to travel to Seoul or something like that if I didn't come to Japan with visa in hand, right?

No, I think you can get a working visa while in Japan but if you say you'll come over before you get it processed then you may find yourself being pressured into working for the company.

I believe Quibby had some problems such as these before.

You can do even better than that. How about a 3 million yen fine and a month in detention?

Just to let you know, I'll confirm everything sheik wrote (except the "amn't" Laughing ).

Quote:

Right. Typical time to get a work visa is 4-8 weeks.

What other miracles has this employer promised? Why is he in such a hurry? Has he let you contact the exiting teacher that you would replace?

If you DO go along with this story, beware of a couple of thing:
1) if he wants you to stay in his home with his loving family
2) if he wants you to teach classes from your apartment
3) if he tells you there are delays in visa processing or mistakes in the paperwork (leading to the delays).

Such stories above have been reported for a few shady outfits that convinced teachers to hang on until they'd overstayed their visas, then they were kicked out with no legal recourse to getting their final paycheck, and sheik has laid out the rest of the story.

Yes, yes! I love it!

I amn't displeased with your use of this marvelously common contemporary English phrase! Well done. 100点!
