Ok, at what point are people bailing on Japan? 130? (I shudder to think of it, but you know it could happen) |

I am 13,000 dollars Canadian in debt. I dragged my feet paying off my debts and now I regret it. (I've still come a long way however).
I have decided that it is going to be my main priority to get out of debt and get some bucks saved and then get out of dodge. I have never been a fan of Japan, and what drew me here in 2002 was a 77 yen dollar, and high wages.
Since I have got here, there has been downward pressure on wages, and now I am seeing increases in prices. I don't see a very bright future for ALT work with all these cut throat companies either.
I hear that they are talking parity with the US dollar. I also read that the US dollar is dropping against most of the world's currencies......why the heck is the yen sitting at 122 yen for a US dollar?
This is getting difficult to take. |

Why wouldn't you be looking at Korea then? Do you view Japan as the lesser of two evils? |

I've left Japan and come back. But I was here in the late 1990's when it was often 130-140 to the U.S. dollar. That wasn't the main reason I left, but it sure sucked trying to pay student loans on a crappy teacher's salary and then getting hammered on the exchange rate on top of it. |

Ha! Fair enough...it DOES make me feel moderately better to know I'm not suffering alone though!
Silence on currency manipulation at the recent G8 summit means the yen isn't dropping any time soon... |

I considered going to Korea, but I have established myself with a group of private students. It would take a fair bit of time to get the same number in Korea. I also have a furnished apartment here. So, I guess I am stuck. I really can't believe how fast the Yen has dropped against the Cnd dollar.
It really gets me angry when I hear of the Japanese government buying US dollars to keep the Yen at about 118- 120 yen. |

When I first came to Japan, I had debt. However, I made it a point to pay it off. It was my number one priority. I didn't miss out on anything, and I worked a little extra. I was paying it off around the low 70s. I'm happy I did. I'm totally debt free, and am holding my money in my bank account here. The exchange rate bothers me, but won't affect me until my next holiday to Canada. |

actually, in Korea you can get everything paid for. plane ride over, plane ride home, furnished apartment for free, and a huge severance pay at the end.
also if you're a white guy.... privates are a cinch to get. ESL in Korea is probably one of the biggest businesses in Korea. and having that "white" factor will definitely make it easy to get some privates.
plus it doesn't hurt that the won is steadily rising |

It's amazing, because our Kiwi, American, Brits and Aussie friends also feel the pain! |

Will the Yen ever recover? Can the Japanese economy regain its former glory? Can I pay my student loans back home? |
