Im planning to get a notebook. I need one. My problem is:

a) do I just get a basic one that will suit my needs basically, ie. net; word; maybe ppt, as Im planning to keep travelling for a few more years so it makes sense to get something basic and not expensive.

or,

b) do I splash out a bit and get a Mac (that I really like) and that has alot more features and just hope that I can keep it safe and get it serviced, should I end up working in Korea; China or UK ...

Any words of wisdom/advice would be welcome Smile

When I used to sell computers, we would ask the customers what they were planning on using their computer for (mainly) and make recommendations in part based on that.

In spite of our recommendations, we also told people to spend as much as they could afford -- or as much as they were comfortable spending... Figure out a budget -- how much do you really want to throw at this thing? That may also help you decide what you're in the market for.

If the Mac you like is within your buying window, get it and make the most of it.

I use Macs and I have had no problem living in Asia with them. Actually, I think Macs are better if you're moving around, because they're the same everywhere. You don't have to worry about getting it in English and all that. It's all built in. All the languages are there.

The prices in Japan are quite similar to those at home if you need accessories, servicing, or a flashy new one once you get settled. Korea was even cheaper than the States for servicing (not that you'll probably need servicing, but my cats broke off the power cord inside the jack).

I'm always buying new laptops but I usually give the old ones to friends and all the ones I've owned (five over the past eight years) are still going quite well.

The only thing to remember is that you'll probably want to buy Microsoft Office. Otherwise, you won't be able to open attachments when an employer/prospective employer wants you to fill something out in Word. You won't be able to open all those pointless Powerpoint emails that people forward to you. And if you need to use a computer for work to do lesson plans or whatnot, you won't be able to use the school's templates.

I lived in Korea and got an illegal version, which I sometimes stress out about. I haven't had any problems, but I always hear rumors. Maybe this year I'll get a new macbook and buy the real Office this time...

HA! Not even for all the kimchi in Korea!

That's why the computer gods created Open Office.

Get one that suits your needs, and a little more. You could easily buy a laptop for 100,000 yen, and it will be more than enough computer for you.

I'm so out of it. When I read the post I thought "Jesus, why the hell would anyone need advice about what type of notebook to get? They only cost a dollar or two and basically there are only so many sizes of paper...."

Embarassed
