I, too, have one of those "I don't care anymore" classes; a grade 5 one. Every single class ends up horrible and they start talking after 3 or 4 minutes and just wont stop. I'm telling them to shut up and pulling kids out of class and writing names on the board every five seconds. It totally sucks. The Chinese teacher in that class is some, like, 21 year old girl who doesn't know her ass from her elbow and never helps. When I attempt to talk to her about it all I get are "they're like that in every class" excuses. I suggested that their head teacher (whom they're deathly afraid of) should stay in the class and supervise, which the CT in question shot down with a "no way." When asked why such a thing was impossible she replied with: "the head teacher's time is important." Oh yeah, and mine isn't, huh? Dumbass.

The other day she had supposedly come up with a "good solution" which naturally made me happy. Her solution, though, turned out to be "teach to the good students and let the others do something else." My fucking jaw almost fell through the goddamn floor when I heard that. There are about 4 good kids in that class and 20 terrible ones and did she really think I was going to do something like that? She looked totally confused when I told her that that solution was ridiculous and irresponsible.

I need to find a better place to work, for real.

whyellothere.

do the ehh-game.

one student comes up to the front and class asks questions and the person can't say 'ehhh'. if she/he does she/he is out and the person asking the question has to come up.

do the 'yes/no' taboo word-game.

same as above.

do boggle on the blackboard. heap of letters in a four by 5 grid. ss make as many words as they can. must be more than 3 letters long. hide an 8 or 10 letter word in the grid. award a prize for the students that find it. ss go at it, then lay back and relax.

do 'the room' (good for past tense).
draw empty room and list of stuff to put in. divvy the class up in groups and have each group put a thing in a certain place (bed, table, chair, window, door, bottle of wine, picture of a woman, watermelon, letter). after having done this write 'dead man', knife, footsteps, and .... the ss put the dead man somewhere and the other things. after that tell em they are police detectives and have to explain the murder scene. make sure they use lots of adjectives to describe the things they've put in cuz then you can draw them accurately. practises adjectives, preps of place, past tense. brilliant activity.

do the 'hitman' game (gets noisy).
divvy up in teams. every team has a speaker. everyone stands up.
have categories on the board like 'animals', food and drink, fruit and veggies, hobbies, cities, heavy things, small things. write a letter on the blackboard like A, B, C. first speaker to say a word in the category starting with that letter can kill someone in the classroom who then has to sit down. if speaker is killed, new one is chosen.

do stump the teacher.
class in 2 teams. team writes a word behind you on the board. you can't see it. the other half has to describe what it is without using the word. after some time have ss from teams come up instead becomes 'stump the student'.

do hangman football.
draw a football pitch and ball in the middle. couple of spaces to each goal.
words for two teams (girls and boys). if they get a letter right the ball moves 1 space towards the goal. score points.

do superhero convention.
discuss superheroes like superman, spiderman, hulk, etc.
discuss name, superpowers, weakness, appearance.
then ss groups make their own superhero.
draw a blueprint picture of a terrorist hideout with 2 children hostages and laseralarm, bomb, guards, cameras, a crocodile, a heavy wall, etc. groups explain how they save the hostages with their superheroes.

do crazy debate.
its in the idea cookbook.

okay.

This is usually fun, and it's worked well in the past for me. I tried this earlier this week on some "high level" middle school students and it failed miserably. I mean, most MS students in Guangdong know Spiderman, Superman, Batman, and they also have some of their own Chinese superheros they can refer to.

It was easy enough. I didn't go into nearly the depth you describe above, and if your students in Guilin can do this; damn, I'm on the next bus to there.

We went over some superpowers; which was basically me trying to elicit what some are...even in Chinese. One student's apt response was "I can make lots of money". The ONE student from Taiwan actually tired whilst the rest of the twits chortled in Cantonese to each other and wasted time as they usually do. NO LEVEL OF SCOLDING will bring them back to life. But, if we follow the book and do the usual boring repeating of words, they are TOTALLY IN THE ZONE. I hate students here so much.

After that, I asked them to give the name, where the hero is from, what are the powers...


Completely brain-dead students. Supposedly to be the cream of the crop in a "good school" and most of them can only talk about how they like to play on QQ or how they think everything is boring.

Actually I was pleasantly suprised by the level of English and participation here at the school where I currently work. The kids are good fun, and I'm talking about junior 2 classes now by the way. They even split the class in two to make English language classes more effective.

So yeah come on over. Smile

Money isn't that good here, but if it's a nice lifestyle and a good working environment youre looking for Guilin is a good choice. Anyway, you know this city right? After all didn't we meet in Yangshuo sometime way back?
