hi,

I'm a U.S. citizen with a B.A. wanting to pursue training in ESL. From what I've read on this forum so far, it seems the CELTA is the accredidation which would give me the most flexibility as far as working in a variety of different markets (Korea, Japan, E.U. if i can manage the VISA Wink ).

I understand the prevailing wisdom is to get your CELTA from a program in a country near where you'd like to eventually work. I'm still kind of curious about what programs might be available in my area (Northwestern U.S.) The main reason being that I'm elligible for financial aid in the U.S., but unsure how to use that towards any kind of education in Europe or Asia.

I've also flirted with the idea of getting my M.A. in Applied Linguistics. I'm curious if that would open more career doors for me down the road, or if it would be more viable to enter a country as a student and make contacts/look for ESL work while there.

As far as Japan goes, no certification is really needed. Were you thinking of getting a master's degree, too? That is what would really make things more flexible, in my opinion.

There is a TESL certificate from the program at the Washington Academy of Languages, taught through PSU in Seattle. You might want to look that up. Feel free to PM me about it, too.

There's an International House CELTA program in Portland:

I thought about doing that one but since it's 1000 bucks more here than in Slovenia ($2350 as opposed to $1300), I'm heading to Ljubljana. (It's cheaper AND they have things such as castles and dragons there.)

terrible facilities at IH "Portland". Mad

AND: IH "Portland" is not in Portland...it is approx. 8 miles out of the city, making it difficult to attract students which, believe it or not, are needed to fulfill UofCambridge requirements for teaching hours. Some changes are needed at that IH franchise in my humble opinion.

Portland State Univ offers a MA TESOL:
