I don't think anyone is making excuses. As you say, those who booed were being idiots; however, when I see a comment such as El Gallo's "I think this was racist", yeah, I'm going to respond if I think that's not the reason why.
I'm not sure I buy your argument about non-biased judging. If I have ancestors who came to the USA from the UK, for example, are you saying I couldn't show favoritism towards an American contestant as opposed to a British contestant? Hmm. |

We're not talking about ancestors. We're talking about grandparents. In Navarro's case, his grandfather was an illegal alien. And I was just responding to one of the rather weak excuses given for the booing. I believe you said this:
"My understanding is that a small portion (not all) of the Mexican audience booed because they felt it was unfair judging. Miss Mexico didn't place in the top five finalists, yet Miss USA did after taking a fall on her backside.
Could there have been bias in the judging of the American panelists? The Mexicans who booed seemed to think so."
Weak, politically correct BS. Mexicans could give Americans lessons in racism, or perhaps you haven't heard of criollos, mestizos, and indios.
Mexico. Apparently not ready for prime time. |

LOL! If you don't like my "weak, politically correct BS" posts, maybe you shouldn't read 'em! |

My morbid curiosity got the better of me, and I looked it up on YouTube.
When Ms. USA was announced as one of the Top 5, I didn't hear any booing.
When she fell, I didn't hear any booing. (I have to admit it was kind of funny, seeing her go from her 'sexy model walk' to flat on her bum. But she handled it really well. Instead of sitting there, waiting for someone to help her, she got up immediately and continued her 'modelling'.)
When she was being interviewed, the boos were quite loud. In addition to the abucheos, there was also shouting, but I couldn't figure it out (someone said they were shouting "Mxico!")
On the YouTube site, there were comments from Mexicans. Some said she was booed because she'd fallen, others said it was because she was not "that pretty", others said it was simply because she was a pinche gringa in a rigged gringo competition. There were also quite a few who condemned the booing and said that they were embarrassed by it.
I also don't think "race" (whatever that is ) had a lot to do with it. And a whole country shouldn't be considered "not ready for prime time" because of the bad behaviour of some people in the audience.
By the way, Ms USA carried on despite the din and at the end smiled sweetly, waved to the audience and said "Gracias Mexico", so I think she came out winning anyway. (I can't believe I've written about a beauty contest on Dave's Clearly, I need a life.) |
